A picturesque view of downtown Leavenworth with Bavarian-style buildings set against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and low-lying clouds. The town features classic Alpine architecture, with signs and colorful fall foliage adding to the charm. Mist hovers over the surrounding peaks, creating a crisp, tranquil atmosphere under a bright blue sky.

Flying: Best Airport is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
Driving: Takes 2.5 to 3 hours from Seattle. Most popular route is via Highway 2.
Bus: Amtrak and Northwestern Trailways run two buses a day from downtown Seattle. Bad reviews – I wouldn’t recommend it!
Shuttle: Leavenworth Shuttle & Taxi (509)-548-7433 or Wenatchee Valley Shuttle & Leavenworth Trolley Co. (509)-293-5773
Train: The Amtrak Cascades train leaves Seattle’s King Street Station and takes you to Leavenworth’s Icicle Station.
Tour: Take the Leavenworth Exclusive Tour from Seattle and let them handle all the details.

Leavenworth may be small, but it packs a big punch, especially when it comes to the holidays.

People fly in from all over the place to experience the magical Christmas in Leavenworth celebration, where the entire town is decked out in lights and holiday cheer.

The fall is just as popular, with Oktoberfest drawing in crowds for some serious drinking, food, and fun.

Most visitors come through Seattle, often landing at Seattle Tacoma International Airport. From there, it’s all about figuring out the best way to get to Leavenworth. While hopping on a magical sleigh would be fun, you’ve got a few more realistic options to consider.

In the next sections, I’ll cover all the transport options to make your trip as easy as possible!

Cars line the street, and pedestrians stroll past the charming shops, with snow-covered mountains towering in the background. A red banner with the German phrase "Frohe Weihnachten" (Merry Christmas) adds a festive touch to the wintery atmosphere.

How to Drive from Seattle to Leavenworth

Whether you live in the Seattle area or are visiting from afar, the most popular way to get from Seattle to Leavenworth is by making the 2.5 to 3-hour drive east through the Cascade Mountains.

If you’re flying into Seattle, landing at Seattle Tacoma International Airport, you can easily rent a car right after you land and hit the road for the scenic drive to Leavenworth.

The most popular route is via Highway 2, which takes you through Stevens Pass—a stunning, mountainous drive with breathtaking views.

If you’d prefer a less steep option, you can take I-90 to Cle Elum and head north on Highway 97, which takes you through Blewett Pass. This route is slightly longer but can be a better choice in snowy weather conditions.

Both routes are gorgeous, but I’d highly recommend driving along US-2. The views are absolutely incredible, with towering granite peaks and charming alpine towns along the way. You could even take one route to Leavenworth and the other one back to mix things up!

Both highways do have steep, winding sections since you’re driving through the mountains, but they’re generally well-maintained year-round.

Pro Tip: If you’re driving from Seattle to Leavenworth in the winter, be sure to check the weather conditions and carry tire chains in your vehicle (it’s actually required on passes like Stevens Pass and Blewett Pass). Four-wheel drive is also a good idea for those snowy mountain roads!

How to Take The Bus From Seattle to Leavenworth

If driving over a mountain pass in the winter doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, you can always take the bus from Seattle to Leavenworth.

Amtrak and Northwestern Trailways offer two direct buses each day from downtown Seattle to Leavenworth.

Buses leave at 8:50 AM and 9:15 AM, arriving in Leavenworth around 12:10 PM.

Ticket prices range from $45-69 each way, depending on the schedule and availability. The bus ride takes about 3-4 hours, but I’ve heard not-so-great reviews about the experience. I’d only recommend taking the bus as a last resort.

Pro Tip: The bus station isn’t at Seattle Tacoma International Airport, so you’ll need to get to the Amtrak/King Street Station in downtown Seattle. You can either take the Central Link Light Rail from the airport or grab an Uber for a more straightforward option!

An Amtrak train travels through a snow-covered landscape, surrounded by tall evergreen trees dusted with snow. The train moves along the tracks in a wintery scene, creating a sense of motion as it passes by the quiet, forested area. The clear sky and snowy ground highlight the cold, serene environment.

How to Take the Train From Seattle to Leavenworth

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly way to get from Seattle to Leavenworth without a car, the Amtrak Cascades train is a good option.

It departs from Seattle’s King Street Station and takes you all the way to Leavenworth’s Icicle Station, right on the edge of town.

Amtrak operates just one daily train to Leavenworth, leaving downtown Seattle at 4:55 PM and arriving at Leavenworth’s Icicle Station around 8:15 PM.

Heading back, the Empire Builder train departs Leavenworth each day at 7:23 AM, arriving in Seattle by 11:30 AM.

The trip takes about 3-5 hours, but the scenic views of mountain peaks and forests make the ride feel much shorter.

Taking the train can be a magical experience—no worrying about roads or snow, just sit back and enjoy the view! You’ll even pass through the Cascade Tunnel, the second-longest tunnel in the country, stretching almost eight miles.

Keep in mind that train tickets start around $60 one-way and can sell out months in advance, especially around the holidays.

Pro Tip: Sit on the north side of the Leavenworth train for the best views heading there. The train’s observation car is also open to all passengers and offers incredible panoramic views of the mountain peaks. And don’t forget to arrange a shuttle or taxi to pick you up at the Icicle Station, as it’s a bit outside the town.

🌟 Bonus Pro Tip: If you actually want to see or do anything in Leavenworth, the limited train schedule means you’ll need to stay in the town for at least two nights (pssst… if you’re planning on staying overnight, check out my post all about the best hotels and cabins in Leavenworth for all budgets!)

You Can Hire a Shuttle From Seattle to Leavenworth

If you’re like me and buses are just not your thing because you get really motion-sick whenever you ride one, then just hire a shuttle! It might cost you a little extra, but trust me, it’s well worth it!

Leavenworth has two shuttle services you can hire:

First pick: Leavenworth Shuttle & Taxi (509)-548-7433
Second pick: Wenatchee Valley Shuttle & Leavenworth Trolley Co. (509)-293-5773

Another Option is to Join a Tour from Seattle to Leavenworth

If you’re just planning a day trip to Leavenworth, joining a guided tour is one of the easiest ways to go.

Whether you’re a solo traveler or just prefer someone else to handle the details, a local guide will take you through the scenic route while sharing fun facts about this charming small town.

Plus, you’ll have plenty of time to check out the attractions in downtown Leavenworth without worrying about driving or parking!

Here are the two most popular and highly reviewed tours from Seattle:

Leavenworth Tour from Seattle: This tour lasts around nine hours, giving you about two hours to enjoy everything Leavenworth has to offer.
Leavenworth Day Trip from Seattle: If you want more time in Leavenworth, this day trip takes you straight to the heart of the Bavarian village. You’ll get about five hours to explore.

No, you can’t fly directly into Leavenworth.

The closest airport is Wenatchee (EAT) Airport, about 25 miles away. While you could fly into Seattle and then catch a domestic flight to Wenatchee, I wouldn’t recommend it—you would’ve already reached Leavenworth if you drove, and the flights tend to be pretty expensive.

So, unless you’re really set on flying, it’s easier (and cheaper) to drive or take another transport option from Seattle.

The scene is bright and vibrant, with snow-dusted trees and mountains in the background under a clear blue sky. Once you find a spot to park, getting around Leavenworth is super easy.

The downtown area is small, so you can walk everywhere—whether it’s checking out the Christmas lights, grabbing a bite to eat, or exploring the shops.

But finding parking during the holidays can be tricky. If you get there early, you might score a spot on the street or in a public parking lot, but they fill up fast.

The best thing to do is stay at a downtown hotel or rental, so you can park once and forget about your car.

If you don’t want to deal with parking at all, the Wilkommen Park & Ride behind Safeway has free shuttles to take you downtown every hour. And if you need a ride, you can always call Leavenworth Shuttle & Taxi at (509)-548-7433.

Here are some handy tips to make your trip from Seattle to Leavenworth as smooth as possible. Whether you’re driving, taking the bus, or hopping on the train, these pointers will help you avoid any hiccups along the way!

Check The Weather: If you’re driving, especially in the winter, be sure to check the weather conditions for the mountain passes using the Washington Department of Transportation website. This will help you decide the safest route to take—or if it’s safe to drive at all!

Be Prepared for Snowy Roads: If snow is in the forecast, make sure your vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive and carry tire chains. It’s legally required on passes like Stevens Pass and Blewett Pass during winter.

Leave early to avoid traffic – If you’re driving, try to leave early in the day to beat the Seattle traffic. Weekends and holidays can be especially busy on the highways.

Fuel Up Before You Go: There aren’t many gas stations once you leave the Seattle area, so make sure to fill up your tank before heading into the mountains.

Visit Midweek – If possible, plan your visit during the middle of the week to avoid huge crowds. The weekends are the busiest, so take that into consideration before you book your trip.

Plan for extra time in winter – Snowfall can slow things down on Stevens Pass, so give yourself extra time if you’re traveling during the winter season.
