Belize Breakdown: Best Places to Stay in Belize

Belize features five distinctive regions:

  • Belize City, known as the heart and soul of the country and where you will fly into the country.

  • The Cayes, a collection of mostly uninhabited islands off Belize’s Caribbean coastline, with Ambergris and Caye Caulker being the primary ones tourists visit.

  • Western Belize, which has dense jungles, towering mountains, and ancient Mayan temples.

  • Orange Walk and the North are home to remarkable Mayan sites and are mostly agricultural.

  • Southern Belize, which has lush rainforests, rivers, and abundant wildlife.

With a ton of Things to Do in Belize, it’s crucial to plan where you stay in Belize thoughtfully to make the most of your time! Here are the top five popular destinations in Belize:

Tourists walking the sandy streets of Caye Caulker, lined with palm trees and colorful beach bars.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker, my favorite location, offers a laid-back village vibe with a backpackers paradise feel. Life here moves to the rhythm of the waves, making it the ultimate island escape with affordable hotels and island charm. Note: you wont find any resorts on this island.

One of the best perks to choosing Caye Caulker for your stay in Belize is that the island has no cars and only dirt roads. You can walk to anywhere on the island in 10 minutes or rent a pedal bike or golf cart for convenience.

You can get to Caye Caulker in only 45 minutes by ferry from Belize City. Or you can take a quick 10-minute flight on a puddle jumper.

Kate and her husband posing in front of a colorful San Pedro sign with palm trees and the ocean in the background. San Pedro is one of the Best Places to stay in Belize, featured.

Ambergris Caye:

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest island and most popular tourist destination. The city on the island, San Pedro, has lots of great restaurants, fun bars, and a busy nightlife.

While there are cars, most people use golf carts to get around. Sometimes it feels like a big game of bumper cars with them! My husband and I call it “Golf Cart Mania.” But once you leave San Pedro town, things calm down a lot.

If you want a classier beach vacation, Ambergris Caye is perfect. There are many amazing beach front resorts to choose from and wider selection of vacation rentals.

The ferry trip to Ambergris Caye takes longer, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Or you can choose a quicker option, a 15-minute flight on a small plane to get to San Pedro.

white sandy beach of Placencia with a turquoise beach chair and palm trees along the shore. Its a clear blue sky day.

Placencia:

Placencia is a quiet fishing village found at the bottom of the Placencia Peninsula in southeastern mainland Belize.

Even though it’s growing more touristy, people still think of it as kind of out-of-the-way, keeping its old-world charm.

When it comes to the most beautiful beaches in Belize, everyone talks about the Placencia Peninsula. It’s known for its 16 miles of perfect sandy shores, which people call ‘barefoot perfect’.

You can find some resorts there and it’s a great spot to visit the southern part of the nearby Belize Barrier Reef. Fishermen from all over the world come here for the fantastic fishing.

It takes about 4 hours to drive from Belize City, or you can hop on a quick 25-minute flight.

Big Rock Falls

San Ignacio:

If you’re on the hunt for a cool town packed with Maya history and the hub to amazing adventures and myan ruins, San Ignacio is the place to stay.

San Ignacio is the vibrant hub of the Cayo District in western Belize, near the Guatemalan border. Here you’ll find many jungle tours allowing you to explore a world of ancient mayan ruins, lush rainforests, and underground caves.

Travelers seeking adventure will find plenty to keep them busy in this popular destination.

Getting from Belize City to San Ignacio takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes by car.

View of Belize city water port filled with small sail boats and lots of older buildings along the shore in the back ground. The buildings look old and ran down and stacked on top of each other.

Waterfront of Belize City

Belize City

Belize City is located on the eastern coast of mainland Belize along the Caribbean Sea. It serves as the main hub for transportation into and out of the country and is where cruise ships stop.

Although Belize City has some amazing historical sites and many popular events, I strongly advise against selecting this location as your primary accommodation when visiting Belize.

It has gained a negative reputation for being congested, dilapidated, and plagued by crime. I recommend you use it solely as a gateway to another destination and depart as soon as possible.

I’ve got you covered with recommendations for Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, San Ignacio, Placencia, and Belize City.

1. Best Hotels in Caye Caulker – My Favorite Island!

If you’re up for some fun island adventures, Caye Caulker’s got it all, and then some! Relaxation isn’t just an option on Caye Caulker—it’s inevitable.

Caye Caulker is hands down my favorite island, and I think it’s the best place to stay when you visit Belize. It’s got such chill vibes, and the locals are incredibly friendly. You can totally feel the “go slow” vibe here, with most visitors taking their time and soaking it all in.

Everything operates on “island time,” which can be frustrating if you’re not into taking it easy and indulging in a little relaxation.

Here are the Best Hotels for Every Budget in Caye Caulker:

El Ben's Cabanas with thatched roofs surrounded by palm trees. Each has a private deck with beach chairs on it.

Things to See and Do in Caye Caulker

It’s ok if you don’t want to “go slow,” there are so many things to do on Caye Caulker and so little time! Here are a few of my favorites:

2. Best Hotels in Ambergris Caye – Largest Island

Kate floating on her back in the clear turquoise waters at Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye, Belize, with a view of the shoreline and palm trees in the distance.

Swimming at Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is the biggest and most famous of the Belizean islands.

Since it’s bigger, it has more amenities like luxury hotels, beach clubs, restaurants, and activities. But because of that, it’s also MUCH more crowded and busy!

The costs for food and a place to stay on this island are slightly higher compared to Caye Caulker, and it has a more “Americanized” vibe than its neighboring island.

The main town of San Pedro has some of the best restaurants and plenty of options for drinks in the evenings, and there’s quite a bit more nightlife here in general.

Ambergris Caye perfectly captures the feeling of a Caribbean paradise and continues to be one of the best places to stay in Belize.

Here are the Best Hotel for Every Budget on Ambergris Caye:

From their private beach, beautiful cottages, impeccable grounds, spa services, and many dining options, you’re sure to have an unforgettable tropical getaway!

3. Best Hotels in Placencia – Most Beautiful Beaches

White pristine beach in Placencia Belize with palm trees along the shore. Blue lounge chairs on the beach.

In southern Belize, you’ll find this small emerald peninsula with sixteen miles of beautiful white sandy beaches. Few experiences are as soothing to the soul as watching a Belizean sunset from a quiet Placencia beach.

Although Placencia’s beaches are some of the best in Belize, swimming is mediocre due to the presence of turtle grass near the shore, which is not fun to step on. Also you should know that the area has become quite touristy and is a little more on the expensive side.

It does, however, offer world-class fishing and access to some amazing remote Cayes on the southern end of the Barrier Reef.

To sum up, Placencia provides a picturesque environment and a relaxed way of life. However, its expensive nature and touristy vibe might not appeal to everyone.

Here are the Best Hotel for Every Budget in Placencia:

Xunantunich Mayan Temples

The town of San Ignacio is located in western Belize, near the boarder of Guatemala and its such an amazing gem for nature lovers! You can explore ancient mayan ruins, lush rainforests, and really cool underground caves and rivers for here. It’s the best home base for unforgettable jungle adventures!

Here are a few drawbacks to consider thou:

If you’re after a classic beach getaway, this will not fit the bill as it’s set far inland. While the amenities cover the basics for a comfortable stay, you won’t find many luxury resorts or fancy dining options here. And it’ll be better enjoyed if you rent a car!

Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re into exploring the jungle. With its fascinating ancient Maya ruins, underground rivers, mysterious caves, diverse wildlife, and friendly locals, San Ignacio offers the most authentic taste of Belize.

Here are the Best hotels for Every Budget in San Ignacio:

If you must stay, choose a reputable hotel for safety. Here are a few of the best hotels in Belize City I recommend it you have to stay here:

Travel Tips for Visiting Belize

Although Belize is a small country in Central America, it stands out as a premier tourist destination. Whether you’re on a tight budget or seeking luxury, Belize offers accommodation options to suit every preference.

Here are some Belize travel tips that’ll help make booking your trip easier on you and your wallet:

Practical Tips for Booking Hotels in Belize

Take a look at these helpful tips to make sure you pick the best hotel for your trip to Belize. Whether you’re on a tight budget or looking for a little luxury, these tips will help you book the perfect stay.

1) Consider visiting Belize during the off season: This period is during the rainy season (June to November). Hotels often offer discounts to attract visitors during this time when weather conditions are less predictable.

2) Come during the Shoulder Season: You might find cheaper prices before or after the busiest tourist season, usually from December to April.

3) Check for Holiday Deals: Some hotels may have exclusive deals during the holidays. For example, Christmas and New Year’s Eve might have special packages.

4) Choose Weekdays vs. Weekends: Prices often fluctuate depending on the day of the week, with weekdays (Monday to Thursday) typically being more affordable compared to weekends (Friday to Sunday).

5) Share a house rental with friends: Sharing expenses with friends can help make your trip more affordable! Renting a place with a kitchen can be a smart choice, especially if you plan to cook instead of eating out.

6) Book three to six months in advance: Booking ahead of time can come with perks like early bird discounts. Whether it’s cheaper prices for hotels, tours, or flights, planning ahead can save you a lot of money!

Lobster Season in Belize is July 1st to February 28th.

Seasonal Factors and Events Affecting Hotel Availability.

There are seasons and local festivities in Belize that can sway your hotel booking decisions. Knowing these things will help you plan your trip to Belize better and find the right place to stay.

Dry Season (Peak) – November to April

During the peak season, when the weather is at its best and big celebrations like Christmas and Easter take place, many visitors flock to Belize.

If you’re thinking of going during these months, it’s smart to book your place to stay at least six months early.

Wet Season (Off-Peak) – May to October

During the rainy season, there are fewer people visiting, but you can enjoy events like the September Celebrations and the Belize International Food and Musical Food Festival.

If you plan to come during this season, booking three to four months early should be okay.

Special Events to Consider

Here are a few popular festivities and events that happen in Belize. You can check out everything that is going on at Belizehub.com.

A dry bag backpack is a must have when visiting Belize to keep all your stuff dry.

Must-Have Items to Pack for Belize

Get ready for your Belize adventure! Here, I’ll let you in on the things I think you should pack to make your time in this tropical paradise even better.

Dry Bag Backpack

Belize is known for its water activities like snorkeling, diving, and exploring caves. With a dry bag backpack, you can protect your phone, camera, and other important items from getting wet. Plus, if it rains suddenly, your stuff wont get soaked and possibly damaged. I recommend getting a dry bag that is a backpack for convenience while you explore the islands and the jungle.

Waterproof Phone Case

There’s a high probability that you’ll be exploring Belize’s beautiful islands and water activities putting your most expensive camera, your cell phone, at risk. A waterproof phone case is a simple but essential item to pack! You’ll want to capture all the amazing moments without any worries.

GoPro

One of the best things I bought for my first trip to Belize was a GoPro. It captured every amazing adventure, from swimming with sea turtles to swimming under waterfalls. If you want to bring home incredible memories from Belizes many water activities, definitely consider getting one for your next adventure. You’ll be so thankful you did!

Polarized Sunglasses & Neck Strap

Polarized sunglasses are an absolute must when exploring the stunning turquoise waters of Belize. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, but they also enhance the beauty of the water.

I’ve lost count of how many sunglasses my husband lost in the water before he started using a neck strap! Don’t let that happen to you. We both wear a neck trap to protect our sunglasses.

So, invest in a good pair of polarized sunglasses and don’t forget to attach a neck strap! You’ll thank me later!

Sand Free Towel

I never realized how awesome a sand-free towel could be until I got one. Now, my husband and I make sure to pack ours every time we head to Belize or any other beach destination. It’s incredible how sand just slides off, letting us to dry off without it sticking to us. No more sandy mess to deal with in our suitcases or hotel room either. Trust me, once you have one, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it!

Filtered Water Bottle

In Belize, tap water isn’t safe to drink. That’s why I always bring my filtered water bottle with me. Having it in my hotel room allows me to drink water whenever i want without worrying about getting sick. And let’s be real, my husband goes through water like there’s no tomorrow, so having a filtered water bottle means I’ll always have a drink available.

Plus, it helps cut down on single-use plastic bottles, which is crucial for the ocean, especially on the islands.
