Fall Packing List: What to Pack for Changing Weather

Fall is such a magical season for all of us travel lovers. When the leaves start changing into vibrant colors and the air turns crisp, it’s hard not to be drawn to new destinations. But before you head out, having the right fall packing list is key.

Autumn weather can be tricky, so making sure you’re prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way will keep your adventure stress-free.

That’s why, in this fall packing guide, I’m here to help you put together the perfect fall travel wardrobe—keeping you comfy and stylish on your autumn escape.

Let’s get started!

Packing for Fall

When it comes to packing for a fall trip, it’s all about layers and versatility. The weather can change fast, so you’ll want to be ready for anything.

You’ll want a cozy sweater for chilly mornings, a jacket you can easily take off when it warms up, and don’t forget a good waterproof layer just in case.

Let’s go over the must-haves you’ll need for your fall packing list!

Versatile Outerwear

Let’s talk about the heart and soul of your fall wardrobe: outerwear.

Since the weather in autumn can be all over the place, it’s super important that you pack the right outerwear that can be mixed and matched and handle whatever the sky throws at you.

Lightweight Fall Jacket

When it comes to picking out the perfect lightweight jacket for your fall travels, remember that function should matter first and fashion a close second.

Start by checking the weather forecast to ensure your coat is up for the task.

Think about the activities you’ve got lined up, too. Will you be hiking in the mountains, strolling through the city, or maybe both?

The right jacket is essential, keeping you cozy and stylish throughout your vacation. So, choose wisely, and you’ll be all set to make the most of your fall adventure!

Here are my favorite fall jackets:

Plaid Shaket

I’m absolutely in love with this plaid shacket. I even own it in two different colors. It’s one piece I reach for again and again every autumn. The shacket is so comfy and pairs effortlessly with both jeans and leggings.

Denim Jacket

My oversized jean jacket is a must-pack for all my travels, especially Autumn trips. It’s a travel companion I can’t bear to part with. It has journeyed with me around the globe, and the more I wear it, the better it gets.

The best part is that it goes with everything.

Corduroy Jacket

This little number is my new autumn love! Corduroy has made a comeback, and I’m a big fan! This coat is perfect for fall days. Be sure to size up for an oversized, comfy fit.

Sherpa Shacket

Sherpa is perfect for the changing weather, and this Sherpa shacket is as cute as it is cozy! Choose it in your color. Mine is Green.Get Yours

Stylish Trench Coat

Ah, the stylish trench coat – it’s the cherry on top of your fall wardrobe.

If you ask me, there’s no other piece that adds such a touch of chic to your fall outfit. It’s the classic that never goes out of style.

The beauty of a trench coat is that it seamlessly fits into any fall travel capsule wardrobe. Whether it’s a rainy day that calls for extra protection or a chilly night where you want to look effortlessly cool, a trench coat is your go-to.

You can dress it up for a sophisticated vibe or dress it down for a more relaxed, casual day. These coats are incredibly versatile, a true fall essential that is a must in any fall packing list!

Here are my favorite trenches:

Classic Trench Coat

This trench coat is so chic, making it an absolute must-have for any Fall getaway. I absolutely love mine! I wear it with everything. Adding this classic to your collection is a surefire way to elevate your fall packing list!

Camel Trench Coat

This camel-colored trench is one of my favorite coats for Autumn. It went with me on a two-week New England Road trip chasing Fall foliage. It kept me toasty and stylish all the way.

Cardigans & Fleece

Cardigans are an absolute must pack for autumn. Not only do they add an extra layer of cuteness to your travel outfits, but they also wrap you up like a hug, keeping you cozy and warm.

I’m convinced that cardigans are the best piece of any fall packing list. As soon as the temperatures start to shift, you can bet you’ll find me in a cardigan or fleece.

These pieces are your best friends when it comes to navigating the ever-changing weather of Autumn.

Here are my favorite cardigans:

Boyfriend Cardigan

This cardigan is the first thing I grab whenever I’m packing. I simply can’t go on a trip without it or something similar. Nothing feels more reassuring during travels than a cozy cardigan, offering that familiar touch of home wherever I go.

Button Down Cardigan

This chunky cardigan is on repeat during the Autumn months. I love the buttons and drop shoulders. It adds the perfect pop of autumn color to my fall packing list.

Popcorn Cardigan

I bought this cardigan for all the women in my family one Christmas, and it was a huge hit. I had to buy myself one too! It’s so soft and comfy to wrap up in.

Here are my favorite fleece:

Columbia Fleece Pullover

I love my Columbia fleece pullover! It has kept me toasty and super comfortable on my epic New England fall road trip.

Make sure to get yours one size up for layering and a comfy fit.

Sherpa Fleece Pullover

This fleece is very comfy! You’ll love it for colder days. It’s perfect for layering if you size up. I love to wear this on fall hikes.

Mix-and-Match Wardrobe Staples

Let’s talk about the magic of a mix-and-match wardrobe (aka capsule wardrobe).

It gives you tons of outfit options while keeping your suitcase light. By picking versatile pieces that all go together, you’ll save space and still have a fresh look every day.

Think about only packing tops, bottoms, and layers that work for everything—whether it’s a last-minute hike or a dinner out. A capsule wardrobe approach is like having a mini wardrobe toolbox, making it easy to adapt to the changing weather and whatever activities pop up.

Jeans

A pair of well-fitting jeans is a travel essential. They can be dressed up or down and are comfortable for long days of exploring.

Here are my favorite Fall jeans:

Dark Denim

Dark denim looks great in the autumn!

Pack these skinny jeans for a nice contrast against Autumn’s brilliant colors. Wear them with a cardigan and cute booties, and you’ve got a great travel outfit.

Levi’s Black Jeans

These black jeans rank as a close second among my favorite pairs. They are so comfortable!

I love pairing them with black ankle booties during the fall season. Without a doubt, these are essential for your autumn escape.

Leggings

Leggings are comfortable and versatile. You can wear them on the plane, under dresses, or with a T-shirt and a long sweater for added warmth. They are travel essentials that won’t take up much room in your bag.

Here are my favorite leggings:

Crossover Waist Leggings

These leggings are buttery soft and I love the crossover top detail. They are so comfortable to wear on travel days and for all adventures this Autumn. The perfect blend of fashion and function.

Blue Leggings

If you want to skip the dark denim and save precious luggage space, then these blue leggings are perfect. You’ll be comfortable and stylish, especially when layered appropriately, making them a great choice for any travel outfit.

Fall Tops & Sweaters

Pack a few long-sleeve tops or sweaters in neutral colors that can be layered under jackets or wear them on their own.

Here are some of my favorite fall tops:

Basic Long Sleeve

A basic white long sleeve top is a must for layering in the Fall. It literally goes with everything. This top is the one I reach for the most and I know you will too.

Long Sleeve Knit

I love how this long-sleeved top is thicker and covers the booty. It’s perfect with leggings. A great addition to your fall travel wardrobe.

Long Sleeve Blouse

Including a dressier long-sleeve blouse in your fall packing is smart, especially for those lovely evenings out. This cute blouse won’t wrinkle in your bag, making it the perfect addition to your fall packing list.

Here are a few of my favorite Fall Sweaters:

Striped Turtleneck

This sweater is quintessentially European Fall style. I love it! And it’s such a cozy sweater, too.

It looks stunning paired with a Trench coat. I’ll be wearing this on repeat this Fall. Put this one on your list!

Chunky Knit Turtleneck

If I could only choose one cozy sweater to pack on my fall getaways, this one would be it.

I love the oversized comfiness and the color! OMG, I love the color.

Put this one in your bag. You won’t regret it.

T-shirts

Bring along some basic T-shirts for layering. FYI: My tees are either white or black only. I don’t need more when they go perfectly with everything.

Here are my go-to T-shirts:

Mock Turtleneck Tee

T-shirts are those versatile pieces that effortlessly complement any outfit.

While I typically stick to classic tee’s, I’ve got to admit I have a soft spot for this one with its cute 3/4 sleeves and mock turtleneck. I like it so much that I’ve actually bought it twice now. It’s safe to say this tee is here to stay in my wardrobe.

Crew Neck Tee

I prefer my tees to have a relaxed, long fit through the torso, and this tee ticks all the right boxes for me. While white may not stay pristine for long when packed for a trip, I find myself coming back to buy this one over and over again!

V-neck Tee

Another white tee I adore is a V-neck.

This one is incredibly comfortable, and the curved hem adds a nice touch. What I love the most is its length, as it covers the backside, making it the perfect companion for leggings.

I find myself reaching for this white tee more often than any other in my collection.

Sweater Dresses

Choose a sweater dress or two that can be worn with leggings and a jacket for a stylish yet weather-appropriate look. Sweater dresses are perfect for the Autumn.

Also, I may have a bit of an obsession with them.

Oversized Turtleneck Dress

I don’t know what to say about this one other than I am in love with it! It is an absolute yes from me for your next Fall escape.

Wear it with a Trench coat and booties, and you won’t need anything else this Autumn.

Chunky Knit Sweater Dress

This chunky knit dress is perfect for those days when you’re aiming for an effortlessly put-together look. It’s a must for the autumn season, and it goes with everything and gives you the flexibility to dress it up or down according to your mood and plans.

Mock Turtleneck Sweater Dress

This dress is the perfect amount of slimming but not too tight. You’ll be comfortable on the go in this. Pair it with comfortable booties, and you can wear it all day.

Comfortable Footwear

When it comes to packing for a fall trip, selecting the right footwear can make all the difference. It’s not just about fashion; it’s about comfort and practicality, too.

Fall can bring unpredictable weather, so your shoes should be up for any conditions.

Boots are the star of this season. They offer the perfect blend of style and functionality, providing warmth and protection against autumn’s whims.

The best part? There is quite a variety to suit your style, from cute ankle booties to rugged hikers.

However, if you find that your bag is tight on space, a pair of sneakers can be a smart alternative. They go with just about everything and are a comfortable choice for exploring the fall colors.

Ankle Boots

Ankle booties are a great choice for fall. Look for a waterproof or water-resistant option if rain is in the forecast. Below, I have given you a few options from the favorites I own.

Here are my favorite Fall boots:

Lucky Brand Bootie

These booties were the only shoes I chose to pack for a two-week Fall New England Road Trip. They paired well with all my fall travel outfits and were comfortable to walk all day in. I highly recommend them.

Sorel Evie Lace Boot

These are cutter than a button! And oh-so-comfortable. They are best for late fall into early winter. You won’t regret getting these for your next fall adventures.

Sorel Waterproof Wedge Boot

I’m a huge fan of Sorel wedge boots for their feminine yet chunky appearance.

These not only look sleek but are exceptionally comfortable when you wear them. They are the perfect boots to add to your wardrobe, complementing all your fall travel outfits.

Chaco Waterproof Boot

You’ll be amazed by the longevity of these!

They offer both exceptional quality and comfort, with really great arch support. I can walk or hike in these all day.

Don’t forget to bring these beauties along on your upcoming adventure.

Timberland Hiking Boot

Join the red lace club!

These hikers went with me on a two-week trip to Ireland and Scotland. Surprisingly, there was no “break-in” period; they came out of the box incredibly comfortable and ready for hiking adventures.

Sneakers

Comfortable sneakers are essential for exploring cities and lots of walking.

Choose ones with good arch support for added comfort. I prefer white sneakers because they are classic and go with everything. But you can choose whatever color suits your style and wardrobe.

Here are my favorite sneakers:

Puma Sneaker

The soft gel insoles of these adorable sneakers are very comfortable. I strolled along the cobblestone streets of Rome for three days, and my feet remained perfectly content in these sneakers.

However, you’ll want to order a half-size larger as they run a little small.

Flats

Pack a pair of comfortable flats that can be worn with dresses or jeans for a dressier option that won’t take up space in your luggage.

Here are my favorite flats for fall:

Lucky Brand Ballet Flats

These dainty flats make for an ideal addition to your fall packing list. They’re super soft and easily collapsible, take up little space in your bag, and look adorable on. I’ve had these flats in my collection for many years now.

Layering Accessories

Autumn can be notoriously unpredictable, so it’s important to go on your vacation prepared for anything.

One of the best accessories for layering is a scarf. Throwing one in your travel bag will help you stay warm and spice up your outfits. Plus, I like having one available for the airplane ride because I always get cold.

Gloves are another good idea that you’ll want to sneak into your packing. They’re great for those ‘just-in-case’ moments when you need an extra layer to stay warm.

And let’s not forget hats – not only will they elevate your outfit, but they’ll also shield your head from rain (sometimes snow) and provide sun protection when it decides to peak through the clouds.

Lastly, sunglasses are a must-pack item, even on autumn days. They protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays while adding a bit of flair to your look.

As you pack for your fall adventure, remember to include these accessories; they’ll make all the difference in keeping you comfortable and fashionable, come rain or shine.”

Scarves

A lightweight scarf can add warmth and style to any outfit. Opt for one in a neutral color that complements your clothing choices.

Here are my favorite Fall scarfs:

Blanket Scarf

Blanket scarfs make the best accessory for traveling. I also use mine as a blanket on the plane or fold it into a pillow. This one is my favorite travel companion.

Solid Neutral Scarf

Having a solid scarf in a neutral color increases your options because it will go with everything. This one is so soft on your skin and is great to snuggle into. It’s not as big as a blanket scarf for traveling, but it’s made really well and beautifully.

Gloves

Gloves are just one of those accessories you should never leave home without in the fall, but somehow, I always seem to forget them.

So now, I keep a pair of gloves stashed in many locations for this reason. I collect them in my car, at work, in various coat pockets, etc.

You never know when you’ll need them, but you’ll definitely miss them when you don’t have them.

Look for a touchscreen-friendly set so you don’t have to take your gloves off while on the go.

Here are a few of my favorite gloves:

Fingerless Wool Mittens

I love fingerless mittens for when I travel in cooler temperatures. They give me quick and easy access to my camera and cell phone without having to take them off, and my hands can stay warm. These are a travelers fall must-have.

Touchscreen Gloves

These gloves are thinner but still keep your hands toasty. I like these for warmer fall days.

They allow me to operate my camera and phone without having to take them off, and the anti-slip grip prevents me from dropping my gear.

Classic & Cute Gloves

These gloves are another favorite of mine. I have them in a few colors. I love the longer cuffs to prevent drafts up my sleeves.

They are not my favorite for working my phone or camera, but for everything else, they are great.

Hat

There is just something about a Fedora Hat in the fall that gets me excited.

They are not the easiest to travel with, but they are a great accessory to pack on a fall trip. I recommend wearing it on the airplane and not packing it in your suitcase.

A fedora hat not only looks fashionable but can protect your head from the rain and sun, too.

Here are my favorite fall hats:

Camel Fedora Hat

This is my favorite fedora I own. I have it in two different colors.

The camel color is perfect for Fall and complements all my outfits. I clip it to my personal item bag with a magnetic hat clip when traveling. It’s great for those bad hair days on the road.

Cream Felt Hat

I like this style of fedora with the flat top as well. It’s very flattering on. Either style is my go-to for Fall.

Sunglasses

Just because Autumn has arrived, the sun hasn’t stopped making its appearance. Remember to pack sunglasses for those sunny Fall days. They also come in handy on windy days to protect your eyes from debris.

Foldies

Once I discovered Foldies, my sunglass packing game changed forever!

I absolutely love these sunglasses because they take up no space in my personal item bag, I’m not afraid of breaking them, and they look so good on. I want more colors and styles!

Weather-Appropriate Accessories

Adding accessories like an umbrella, beanie/ear warmer, and a raincoat to your fall packing list is smart for several reasons.

An umbrella can be your savior on those unexpected rainy days, keeping you dry and comfortable as you explore.

A beanie or ear warmer ensures your head and ears stay toasty even when the temperatures drop.

And when it comes to the unpredictable fall showers, a raincoat is your armor of choice. It’s lightweight and easy to carry or shove into your suitcase.

Umbrella

Some of the small, travel-sized umbrellas hardly take up any room in your luggage, and you’ll be thankful you have it when it suddenly decides to pour.

Here is my favorite packable umbrella:

Travel-size Umbrella

This little guy is no bigger than my hand. It fits perfectly in my purse or personal item bag.

I have found myself in many circumstances where I was glad I had it. Its a fall travel must-have.

Beanie or Ear warmer

If you’re traveling to a place with colder temperatures, make sure to pack a beanie or an ear warmer to keep your head and ears cozy.

Here are my favorite beanies:

Slouchy Beanie

I love a slouchy beanie! This one fits nicely and looks really cute on. The quality is good, and my ears stay warm.

Utility Beanie

Sometimes, I want a more utility-style beanie for hiking and outdoor adventures that is more practical. This is my go-to since it’s really warm yet still looks stylish.

Rain Jacket

If rain is in the forecast, it’s a good idea to have a lightweight rain jacket that can easily fit in your bag.

Here is my favorite rain jacket:

Columbia Rain Jacket

I have tried many raincoats, and this one is my favorite. I love that it’s lined for added warmth and the torso is longer so whatever I’m doing the coat won’t ride up and expose my back.

Luggage

Now, let’s talk about what to put everything in.

When it comes to luggage, you’ve got two choices.

I’m personally team hardshell roller luggage all the way! Not only do they look sleek, but they also keep your stuff safer with that extra protection.

Plus, they’re super easy to clean—just grab a sani wipe, give it a quick wipe down, and you’re good to go. No need to worry about germs hanging around.

But if you’re more of a soft-side fan, that works too – it’s all about personal preference.

Here is my favorite suitcase:

Hardshell Roller Suitcase

I have used this luggage for several years, which has held up really well. My favorite thing about them is they glide effortlessly and are really lightweight yet durable.

Personal Item Bag

And, let’s not forget the personal item bag – the most important bag, in my opinion.

It keeps all your essentials within arm’s reach on the airplane. I’m probably more picky when it comes to my personal bag than my suitcase.

Here are my favorite personal item bags:

Expandable Personal Item

I love this bag for traveling because it expands. I try to not expand it on the way to my destination and then expand it on my way home so I have room to bring souvenirs home with me. It’s a very roomy bag expanded or not.

Compression & Vacuum Packing Cubes

Another packing necessity that is debatable is compression packing cubes.

My OCD insists that I use packing cubes for the organization factor alone, but I feel that they also help me fit more in my suitcase. They are especially useful for cold weather packing.

Here are my favorite packing cubes and vacuum bags:

Compression Packing Cubes

What I love most about these packing cubes is how they simplify my packing process. Once I arrive at my destination, I can take out the cubes I need rather than rummaging through my entire bag, making a mess of everything.

I’m definitely team-packing cubes.

Vacuum Compression Bags

I got these for a colder trip to Ireland and Scotland. I needed a way to pack a lot of warm clothing items to last me for two weeks, and these compression vacuum bags were a game changer.

My husband was so impressed that he even ordered himself some.

Now that you have the full list of clothing items and accessories for Fall, here are my top packing tips to help you make the most of your suitcase space:

Wear Your Bulkiest Items on The Airplane

When you’re packing for a fall vacation, wear your bulkiest clothing items, like a heavy sweater or a coat, and your boots on the plane. This not only frees up space in your luggage but also keeps you warm during the flight. Plus, it’s a practical way to free up valuable luggage space.

Rule of One

Implement the “Rule of One” to avoid overpacking.

I love options just as much as the next person, but when you are trying to fit heavier fall items in your luggage, space runs out quickly.

Try to pack just one coat, cardigan, scarf, and pair of boots. This forces you to prioritize versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched, ensuring you have plenty of outfit options without going overboard with your packing.

Plan Your Outfits for Everyday

Before you start packing, plan your outfits for each day of your trip and for each activity you plan on doing. This helps you visualize what you’ll need and prevents you from packing unnecessary items.

Focus on packing clothing that can serve multiple purposes, making it easier to create daily looks.

Create a Fall Capsule Wardrobe

Building a fall capsule wardrobe is an excellent strategy.

Select a few key pieces that can be styled in various ways. Think in terms of layers, and choose clothing items that complement each other in color and style.

This approach not only saves space but also makes sure you have coordinated and stylish outfits for your travels.

Stick to a Color Palate

To maximize your capsule wardrobe options, stick to a specific color palette. Select neutral shades like black, gray, brown, or navy as your base colors, and add a couple of accent colors. This way, your clothing pieces will effortlessly coordinate, allowing you to create numerous outfits without packing excessive clothing.

Roll & Tuck Your Clothes

To save space and reduce wrinkles, roll your clothing items rather than folding them. This packing technique also allows you to tuck items into nooks and crannies within your luggage, such as inside your shoes, making the most of every inch.

Vacuum Seal Your Clothes

If you’re dealing with limited space, consider vacuum-sealing your clothing. This method removes excess air from bags, compressing your clothing items and creating additional room in your luggage.

It’s particularly handy for bulkier items like coats and sweaters.

Limit Shoes

Shoes can take up a significant amount of space.

To keep your footwear selection in check, limit yourself to two but no more than three pairs that are good for all types of weather and activities. Also choose shoes that can be dressed up or down.

Check the Weather

Before you finalize your fall outfits, check the weather forecast for your destination. This step is important for making any last-minute adjustments to your fall packing list.

If rain is in the forecast, add a raincoat or umbrella; if it’s going to be exceptionally cold, make sure you have enough layers to keep toasty.

Packing tips

With these items on your fall packing list, you’ll stay comfy, cute, and ready for whatever autumn throws your way.

So, don’t let the unpredictable fall weather put a damper on your travel plans. Pack smart, and you’ll be all set to soak in the beauty of the season without a hitch!
