How Many Days Should You Spend on Kauai?
I get asked this question a lot, and well, determining how many days to spend on Kauai largely depends on your travel goals and interests. While getting a taste of the island’s beauty in a shorter trip is possible, I recommend spending at least five days on Kauai to explore all four corners of the island and fully immerse yourself in its wonders.
Here’s why:
In September of 2023, my husband and I got the incredible opportunity to visit Kauai for our Mini Moon. We spent five dreamy days on Kauai and felt our five-day Kauai itinerary was perfect. This timeframe allowed us to explore the island’s diverse regions, from the lush North Shore with its stunning beaches and Hanalei Bay to the dramatic landscapes of the Na Pali Coast and the majestic Waimea Canyon State Park in the west. It also provided room for leisurely activities like hiking, snorkeling, and even a helicopter tour to appreciate the island’s breathtaking scenery.
Although we could see everything we wanted within the five days, there were locations we favored, and we wished we had more time to go back to explore more. Extending your stay to a full seven-day week, not including travel days, would allow for more relaxation time and the flexibility to go back and explore your favorite locations further or find hidden gems off the beaten path.
Whether you have a few days or even a couple of weeks, Kauai will undoubtedly leave you with unforgettable memories of its natural beauty and aloha spirit.
Our 5-Day Kauai Itinerary:
When planning our Kauai itinerary, I left no stone unturned in my quest to create the perfect island getaway. Meticulously, I researched and delved into my go-to resources, from blogs and YouTube videos to Instagram posts, to uncover all the must-see and must-do experiences that Kauai had to offer. I then compiled a list of destinations and activities that spoke to our interests. To ensure we could fully discover each corner of the island, I organized our days around Kauai’s distinct regions (North Shore, South Shore, East Side, and West Side), dedicating each day to exploring one of them. I also took the initiative to book the top two tours at the top of our wish list, securing those unforgettable experiences.
However, I intentionally left the rest of our time unstructured, allowing us the freedom to explore at our own pace. I’ve always believed that travel is about discovery, and I’m not one to be confined to a strict timeline. This approach ensured that we had the flexibility to stumble upon hidden gems and truly immerse ourselves in the beauty of Kauai, creating an unforgettable journey that was as authentic as it was.
Arrival Day:
Lihue Airport
Our journey begins with a warm aloha welcome at Lihue Airport. Since it was our mini-moon and I wanted it to be special, I arranged for us to get a Lei Greeting when we arrived. Arranging for a Lei Greeting offers a warm and traditional Hawaiian welcome, instantly immersing us in the island’s culture and the spirit of aloha. It was a surprise for my husband, and he loved it!
Helpful Tip: Be sure to pack a pair of shorts, a tank top, a bathing suit, and flip-flops in your personal item bag if you are coming from a cooler climate. The first thing you are going to want to do is change ASAP into something cooler. The heat and humidity will hit you hard!
Rental Car
Opting for a rental car is a choice we wholeheartedly endorse! If you decide to go the same route, once you’ve collected your luggage, you can make your way out of Lihue Airport to the rental car shuttle pickup area, located across the street just beyond the baggage claim zone. Our choice was Dollar Car Rental; they offered competitive rates and extended a gracious honeymoon surprise by upgrading our car for free.
Duke’s Restaurant & Kalapaki Beach
Having arrived early with a couple of hours to spare before checking into our accommodations, our post-flight hunger was undeniable. On the South shores of Kalapaki Beach and a short 6-minute drive, Duke’s Restaurant offered an ideal starting point for our island adventure. Nestled in a stunning oceanfront setting and renowned for its delicious fresh seafood, it provided the perfect location to relax, absorb the Hawaiian ambiance, and toast the beginning of our dream island getaway. I highly recommend the fresh Poke Fish Tacos or Coconut Shrimp and sharing the traditional Hula Pie for dessert.
Once we satisfied our hunger at Duke’s, we took a moment to unwind by kicking off our flip-flops and dipping our toes in the warm, gentle waters of Kalapaki Beach. It was nice to stroll along the shoreline and soak up the sun-kissed waves.
Roadside Fruit Stands
En route to our VRBO vacation rental in Kapa’a on the island’s East Side, also known as the Coconut Coast, we made a pit stop at an ABC Market to stock up on groceries. Along the way, we stumbled upon a charming roadside stand where we couldn’t resist the temptation of purchasing fresh coconuts and fresh tropical fruits and indulging in what can only be described as the most heavenly homemade banana bread we’ve ever tasted. This experience also served as our initial introduction to Hawaii’s somewhat startling grocery prices—certainly an eye-opener!
Helpful Tip: Carry a reusable grocery shopping bag in Hawaii, as the state has embraced eco-friendly practices by discontinuing plastic bags. Also, I would recommend stocking up on breakfast essentials to enjoy in the comfort of your accommodation. Most restaurants tend to open around 10 a.m., so if you’re eager to kickstart your day early, preparing breakfast in your own space is convenient, time-efficient, and budget-friendly.
Lava Lava Beach Club for Dinner
After settling into our accommodation, we unpacked our belongings and found ourselves drawn to our balcony, where we could bask in the breathtaking ocean view. Gazing out at the pristine waters, we embraced the surreal notion that we had arrived in paradise. Following a refreshing shower, we took a short stroll down the beach to enjoy a delicious dinner at the Lava Lava Beach Club in the Kauai Shores Hotel, conveniently located within walking distance from our VRBO.
Day 1: Wailua Falls and Boat Tour
Watch the Sunrise
I think you should rise early to catch the first light of day. I may be one of the few who loves rising before the sun on vacation, but the sun rises on the East side of Kauai are some of the best! We began our morning with a coffee on the balcony, listening to the sound of ocean waves as the sun painted the sky with hues of gold and pink.
After witnessing the magical sunrise, we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the comfort of our room. We enjoyed a selection of fresh tropical fruits and the homemade banana bread we picked up yesterday. It was the perfect way to kickstart our day.
Wailua Falls
After breakfast, we drove 20 minutes to Wailua Falls, a 173-foot falls just a step off the beaten path. Wailua Falls is easily accessible by car and can be viewed from the parking area above. Although the falls are one of the most famous falls on Kauai, made famous by the hit TV show Fantasy Island, many visitors stop, take a few photos, and then leave. If you hike to the bottom of the falls, you will likely have it to yourself. Very few travelers make the steep 10-minute trek to the bottom, allowing you to have this stunning natural wonder all to yourself. The solitude offers incredible photo opportunities, capturing the majestic falls in all their glory.
Warning Advisory: The trail is deemed closed as of October 2022 due to a recent tragic incident. Even though there were signs posted that the trail was closed, we saw a few travelers come up. When we asked them if the trail was closed, they reported that it was advised not to go but that the trail was open and there were ropes to help you up and down. I can’t endorse hiking the trail; if you decide to do so, Hike at your own risk!
Porky’s For Lunch
Now, it’s time to eat! Before our exciting afternoon adventure, we made a wise decision to pay a visit to the renowned eatery Porky’s. I must say, it turned out to be a culinary highlight of our Kauai trip. At Porky’s, the menu may be limited to just four options, but each dish is an absolute delight that will linger in your memory long after you’ve left the island. Be sure to savor every bite, as you’ll need the energy for the next adventures of the day.
Zodiac Boat Tour
We then drove to Waimea, where we met with Blue Ocean Adventure. Our Zodiac Boat Tour along the legendary Na Pali Coast was unquestionably one of the standout highlights on our Kauai itinerary.
As the sun began its descent, casting a warm glow over the rugged Na Pali Coast, we zipped along the waves, darted in and out of awe-inspiring lava tubes, jumped off the boa,t and snorkeled with sea turtles among other beautiful marine life. The sheer beauty of the coastline left us spellbound. Words hardly do justice to the feeling of witnessing the dramatic cliffs, hidden sea caves, and untouched beauty of the Na Pali Coast at sunset. If you’re seeking a thrilling and memorable experience in Kauai, I wholeheartedly recommend adding this exhilarating adventure to your Kauai itinerary.
Helpful Tip: They give you a dry bag to keep your belongings safe on the boat. A waterproof camera with a wrist strap is best suited for this adventure. Also, FYI, they only serve fruit and chips on the boat, so eat a big lunch before you head out because you will be back after sunset.
Saddle Room for Dinner
Since we didn’t get off the boat tour till 7:30 p.m. and many restaurants were closed, we opted for the Saddle Room. Despite its ironic Western theme setting on a tropical island, this establishment stays open late and serves exceptional burgers, making it the perfect spot to satiate our hunger we worked up on the water all afternoon.
Day 2: Helicopter Tour and The North Shore
Helicopter Tour
Rise and shine for an early 8 a.m. start with the highly acclaimed Doors Off Helicopter Tour, a choice we made with Jack Harter Helicopters. With my husband’s nearly two-decade-long experience as a professional helicopter pilot, he vouched that Jack Harter’s helicopters were the optimal choice for a tour that maintained impeccable quality and delivered an adrenaline-filled adventure. What sets Jack Harter apart is their ability to access places many other competing helicopters cannot reach. Their smaller helicopters accommodate fewer passengers, ensuring a more personalized experience while showcasing their agility in navigating the island’s deep ravines and rugged terrain.
This was my dream come true adventure, as exploring Kauai from above had topped my Kauai Bucket List. Jack Harter not only met but exceeded our expectations, leaving us with an experience that, as my husband aptly put it, couldn’t get any better.
Helpful Tip: Considering that around 80 percent of Kauai’s terrain remains inaccessible by land, taking to the skies becomes the ultimate means of truly comprehending the island’s unparalleled beauty. Soaring over Kauai’s diverse landscapes, from its lush interior to its dramatic waterfalls and untamed coastlines, offers a perspective that’s nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Garden Island Coffee
After the adrenaline rush of the morning, we decided to make our way to the North shore for some R&R and beach time. On our way up, we found our favorite coffee truck that became our morning routine, Garden Island Coffee on the East Side in Kapa’a. We fell in love with their Macadamia Nut Iced Matcha Latte! We fueled up with an incredible Matcha and their savory, Spicy Turk Bagel Sandwich.
Queen’s Bath
Our next destination was Queen’s Bath, where you’ll find a unique geological wonder. While swimming is not recommended due to changing tides and safety concerns, the hike leading to Queen’s Bath and the chance to witness these natural tidal pools is well worth the detour. The dramatic scenery will leave you awe-inspired.
Hanalei Town
Our next destination was the charming Hanalei Town, where I indulged in window shopping, exploring its numerous boutique shops. As we meandered down the town’s main street, we couldn’t resist the temptation of indulging in some delicious treats, including refreshing mango smoothies, flavorful Shave Ice, and yummy food truck eats that we encountered along the way. Among them, the Tumeric truck stands out as a favorite.
Hanalei Bay and Pier
After lunch, we went to Hanalei Bay with our beach bag for an afternoon of beach time, swimming, and relaxation. The crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay offered a postcard-worthy setting with its turquoise waters and backdrop of lush green mountains. The historic Hanalei Pier is perfect for pictures and jumping off into the waters below.
We wrapped up our day with the ultimate treat—watching the sun dip below the horizon at Hanalei Bay. The tranquil beauty of the bay at sunset, with the old Hanalei Pier in the foreground, is mesmerizing.
Dinner at Kalypso
When it came time for dinner, we opted for Kalypso after working up an appetite at Hanalei Bay. What stood out was their relaxed approach to dining; no reservations were needed. This was a pleasant find as someone who prefers to avoid adhering to strict dinner timelines. And, to our delight, their food didn’t disappoint. Seated by an open window, we enjoyed a delicious meal and some entertaining people-watching. I can’t recommend their Fresh Ahi Poke Bowl enough—it’s a must-try. Meanwhile, my husband thoroughly enjoyed his Macadamia-Crusted Fresh Mahi, making Kalypso the perfect ending to our day.
Day 3. Waimea Canyon and Sunset Hike
We started the day as we have been, with the serene ritual of watching the sunrise, taking in the island’s natural beauty from our vantage point. Maybe I’ll turn you into a sunrise person yet?
Pono Market for Lunch
After our morning routine, it was time to get ready and head to Kapa’a to explore this charming town. We began with our favorite Mac Nut Matcha Latte, then a visit to the Pono Market, a local favorite. Here, you’ll savor some of the best Poke on the island and have the chance to try a traditional Hawaiian classic, Pork Laulau, for lunch. Trust me when I say the Pork Laulau is an incredible dish that you absolutely must savor.
Explore Kapa’a
In my opinion, Kapa’a has an eclectic blend of culture, breathtaking coastal views, and a vibrancy that is underrated and truly a unique island vibe. Choosing Kapa’a as our home base over the north or south shore for the entire trip was a decision we appreciated, as it allowed us to immerse ourselves in this eclectic little town and centralized our daily activities.
Waimea Canyon State Park
After lunch and shopping, we made our way to Waimea Canyon State Park, but before embarking on our journey, we stopped by a local market to gather supplies for our planned sunset hike and picnic.
As we ascended the Waimea Canyon road, we took advantage of the scenic Waimea Canyon lookouts along the way. These vantage points offer breathtaking views and fantastic photo opportunities of the natural wonder. The Waimea Canyon is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and I can see why. It definitely gives off Grand Canyon vibes.
Helpful Tip: If you’re planning to visit the stunning Waimea Canyon and tend to get car sick easily, consider taking anti-nausea medication before your journey. The winding roads leading to the Waimea Canyon can be quite steep and twisty, which might trigger motion sickness.
Kalepa Ridge Trail Hike
We topped off our day with one of my favorite experiences on Kauai, a sunset hike along Kalepa Ridge Trail, which gives stunning views of the Na Pali Coast. This trail is unofficial and is technically closed due to its narrow areas and dangerous terrain, especially when wet. That said, it is still a highly popular trail that hikers frequent. We met several groups of hikers on the trail.
This trail starts from the Kalalau Lookout behind the green fence to the left of the grassy nob and heads downhill about one mile, meaning it’s all uphill on the way out. The hike was worth it as we were rewarded with incredible sunset views, casting an enchanting glow over the Na Pali Coast. It was a romantic and awe-inspiring way to end our day.
Sunset Picnic Dinner
We packed a picnic dinner with us since we knew we wouldn’t be back till late. A picnic added a nice romantic touch as the sun set over Kauai’s Na Pali Coast. The tranquil beauty of this moment is nothing short of magical, so be sure to pack some delicious treats and savor every moment.
Tip: Remember to pack a flashlight or, even better, a headlamp for your hike, wear sturdy shoes with good traction, remain aware of your surroundings, and, most importantly, embrace a deep commitment to the Leave No Trace principles. Make sure to carry out everything you bring in, leaving nature as pristine as you found it.
Day 4: Kalalau Trail and Hanakapi’ai Falls
We once again began our day with the comforting morning ritual we’ve come to cherish, taking in the serene beauty of Kauai’s sunrise. Then, we grabbed our favorite Mac Nut Matcha Latte from the Garden Island Coffee Truck before we headed out on our big adventure today on Kauai’s North Shore.
Tunnels Beach
But before we headed out, we swung into a market to gather supplies for lunch to take on our hike later today. We stopped at the renowned Tunnels Beach on the way to Haena State Park. We spent a few hours enjoying the beauty of Tunnels Beach, both on the sand and beneath the crystal-clear waters. Snorkeling here is a real treat, so make the most of it.
Haena State Park & Kalalau Trail
After we got our fill of Tunnels Beach, we caught a shuttle from Tunnels Beach to Haena State Park. The first two miles of the Kalalau Trail from Haena State Park to the stunning Hanakapi’ai Beach are intense but incredibly scenic. As we arrived at Hanakapi’ai Beach, we took a well-deserved break and refueled with a light lunch we packed earlier. The beach offers a serene setting to rest and recharge.
Hanakapi’ai Falls
Continuing our hiking journey, covering an additional 1.8 miles, we reached the awe-inspiring Hanakapi’ai Falls. This 300-foot marvel is a sight to behold, and you won’t miss the chance to swim in its refreshing pool. It’s the perfect way to cool off and rejuvenate after the hike. We must have swam for over an hour; it felt that good.
Ke’e Beach
We stopped at the famous Ke’e Beach on our way down the Kalalau Trail. This secluded paradise is renowned for its calm, shallow waters that resemble a tranquil pool—ideal for floating and snorkeling. Ke’e Beach is a personal favorite of mine for its serene waters.
When we were finished soaking up Ke’e Beach, we caught the shuttle back to Tunnels Beach, wrapping up our day of adventure with a sense of fulfillment and unforgettable memories.
Dinner at Kalypso Again
Again, we concluded our day with a satisfying dinner at Kalypso’s. I couldn’t help myself, so I ordered the Poke Bowl again!
Helpful Tip: Prioritize hydration by packing plenty of water and drinking it steadily before heading up the Kalalau Trail hike. Between the humidity and physical demand of the trail, you can rapidly dehydrate.
Day 5: Kayaking and Poipu Beach
As our fifth and final morning dawned on Kauai, it was a case of “new day, same morning routine.” It’s funny how when I find something I truly enjoy, I tend to stick with it. Especially when our days are brimming with adventure, maintaining a familiar and comforting morning routine adds a touch of serenity to the extraordinary.
Kayak Wailua River
We headed to Wailua Kayak and Canoe on the Wailua River to start our day with an early kayak adventure.
Helpful Tip: Reserve your kayak online in advance, as they are the only ones right on the water of Wailua River for easy access and run out of kayaks fast. Also, they are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Our kayak trip up the Wailua River was calm and peaceful. We rented a two-person kayak, so getting up the river was easy. I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed the kayaking part of this adventure.
Secret Falls Hike
Upon arriving at the Secret Falls trailhead, roughly four miles upstream and approximately 45 minutes of paddling from our starting point, we securely left our kayak on the shore and headed up the trail. This picturesque trail spanned about 2 miles, offering an easy and enjoyable hike. Unfortunately, the only way to see the beautiful Secret Falls is to Kayak up the Wailua River to the trailhead, but the effort was unquestionably rewarding.
This magnificent 100-foot cascade greeted us with its splendor, accompanied by a refreshing pool that beckoned us to swim, which we gladly obliged.
Helpful Tip: Given the Secret Falls’s popularity, it’s best to arrive early to beat the crowds, and remember to pack your swimsuit for a refreshing dip in the waterfall’s pool.
Lunch at Brennecke’s
Once we wrapped up our kayaking adventure and waterfall hike, we headed to Poipu Beach Park on Kauai’s South Shore for a delicious lunch at Brennecke’s. The best part? No reservations are required before 4 p.m., making it a convenient choice for a midday meal. Once again, I ordered the Poke Bowl, and my husband ordered a big plate of yummy nachos.
Shipwreck Beach
We decided to hop over to Shipwreck Beach since Poipu Beach was crowded. This stunning, less crowded beach offers natural shade from several trees, opportunities for cliff jumping, and excellent snorkeling. The tranquil beauty of Shipwreck Beach might entice you to spend the rest of your day here. We spent about four hours here, soaking up the sun and sea.
Turtles on Poipu Beach
We then headed back to Poipu Beach for the grand finale of our trip, a breathtaking sunset, and to witness the awe-inspiring sight of green sea turtles as they come ashore. This spectacularly rare wonder made our last night in Kauai truly memorable. We saw 20 green sea turtles come ashore. I highly encourage you to go to Poipu to watch in wonder as these graceful creatures beach themselves for the evening. This is the only place in Hawaii they do this, and it happens every night.
The South shore beaches that can’t be missed would be Shipwreck Beach and Poipu Beach! Be sure to add them to your Kauai itinerary!
Puka Dog for Dinner
We kept it simple and savored Hawaiian-style hot dogs from Puka Dog for dinner, adding a unique culinary experience to our Kauai journey. Oh, and I can’t forget I indulged on one last Shave Ice, a sweet and refreshing treat that puts the cherry on top of my final night in paradise.
What I’d Explore on a Return Visit:
If I were to return to Kauai the Garden Isle, there are several experiences I didn’t get to do that I’d like to add to my next Kauai itinerary. The entire island is not big, but there’s just so much to see it’s hard to fit it all in a few days on Kauai.
Here’s a glimpse of what I’d add the next time I visit Kauai:
Kilauea Lighthouse: I’d visit the iconic Kilauea Lighthouse and National Wildlife Refuge. Its historical significance and the panoramic views it offers look captivating.
More Beautiful Beaches: I would make it a point to explore more of Kauai’s beautiful beaches, including Anini and Secret Beach. Anini Beach, known for its calm waters, would be a perfect spot to kick off your flip flops, relax and have some beach time. Secret Beach, with its secluded allure and stunning scenery, would also be a must-visit. Also, I would like to go back to Ke’e Beach and spend more there!
Hiking Trails: Kauai’s lush landscapes are a hiker’s paradise, and I’d love to explore more of its hiking trails. The Awa’awapuhi Trail, known for its breathtaking vistas of the NaPali Coast, and the Kuilau Ridge Trail, with its serene rainforest ambiance, would both be on my hiking itinerary. The Waimea Canyon offers an abundance of amazing hiking trails also. I thoroughly enjoy a challenging hike on vacation, especially with the stunning views Kauai offers!
Island Hopping: While visiting Kauai, why not do some island hopping? The two main Hawaiian islands I’d like to include are the Big Island and Oahu. A journey to the Big Island to witness the awe-inspiring Volcanoes National Park and to Oahu to pay respects at Pearl Harbor would offer a broader perspective of Hawaii’s history and geological wonders.
Food Trucks Exploration: The food truck scene on Kauai is a culinary adventure waiting to be savored. I’d definitely set aside time to explore more of these delightful mobile eateries and sample a wider array of local flavors.
Catamaran Boat Tour: To further unwind, I’d opt for a more relaxing Na Pali Coast Boat Tour on a catamaran, allowing me to soak up the sun, take in the scenery, and maybe even spot some more dolphins and sea turtles along the way.
Whale Watching Tour: Witnessing the majestic humpback whales that migrate to Hawaiian waters during the winter months would be an unforgettable experience. The chance to see these gentle giants breaching and playing in their natural habitat on a whale watching tour would undoubtedly add excitement when I visit Kauai again in the winter months.
Something I discovered when visiting Kauai is that it has so many diverse offerings and an abundance of natural beauty, the list of things to see and do just kept growing. There’s always something new to discover and countless reasons to return to this paradise in the Pacific. I hope these help you build your ultimate Kauai itinerary!
