Your Ultimate Guide to Spending Christmas in Leavenworth, WA

Leavenworth, Washington, is a picturesque village that looks like it’s been plucked straight out of a storybook, all dressed up in Bavarian style, with its buildings looking like gingerbread houses.

But first, before we get into all the Christmas spirit, you might be wondering how Leavenworth became a Bavarian town in the middle of nowhere USA and is it even worth visiting?

A vibrant nighttime view of the Bavarian-style buildings in downtown Leavenworth, Washington, beautifully adorned with colorful Christmas lights. The buildings, painted in festive hues of red, green, and white, feature intricate decorations, glowing snowflakes, and icicle lights. People stroll through the snowy street, enjoying the magical holiday atmosphere under a clear dark sky.

How Leavenworth Became a Bavarian Themed Town

Leavenworth hasn’t always been the charming Bavarian-themed Christmas Village it is today.

Back in the 1960s, it was a sleepy little town struggling to keep afloat after the railroad moved and the timber industry dried up. To prevent themselves from becoming a ghost town, they decided to do something very different.

Taking inspiration from Solvang, a Danish-themed town in California, they decided to reinvent itself. To attract tourists, they transformed Leavenworth into a Bavarian-themed village—and it worked like a charm! Now, it’s one of the top spots for a unique getaway around the holidays.

Tucked in the Cascade Mountains, Leavenworth’s setting looks a lot like Bavaria, which makes the transformation feel even more real. Every year, especially around the holidays, the town turns into the ultimate Christmas destination.

With over half a million twinkling lights, Christmas markets, and plenty of winter fun, it’s easy to see why Leavenworth has earned the title of “The Most Christmasy Town in America.”

    Where is Leavenworth, Washington?

You’ll find the charming town of Leavenworth, located in the heart of the Cascade Mountains, which is almost smack dab in the middle of Washington state.

It’s about 2.5 hours east of Seattle, making it the perfect getaway from the city, with tons of outdoor activities nearby, like hiking and skiing.

The drive will take you over the scenic Stevens Pass, with beautiful mountain views, especially in the winter when the snow blankets everything.

Best Time to Visit Leavenworth’s Christmas Town

The best time to visit Leavenworth’s Christmas Town depends on what kind of holiday experience you’re after.

The famous Christmas lights go up starting Thanksgiving weekend and stay lit until the end of February, so you’ve got a nice window to enjoy the magic.

If you want to catch the holiday festivals—like the Winter Karnival or the Lantern Parade—plan your visit in December. Be sure to check the Christmas Town Schedule for exact dates and details.

Now, if you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, your best bet is to visit mid-to-late December or early January, when the town gets an average of 15-17 inches of snow.

Consider visiting in January for way smaller crowds! The lights are still up, and the snow is still falling, but the pace is a bit slower, giving you a more intimate experience without losing the holiday cheer.

Insider Tip: We found the sweet spot to visit is on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. That way, you avoid the weekend chaos but still get a taste of the liveliness on Friday before things get too crowded.

Kate's Crossing blog, stands in a snowy landscape holding cozy blankets while pointing to a wooden sign that reads "Santa Sleigh." How to Get to Leavenworth, WA

Now that you’re all excited to visit Leavenworth for Christmas let’s make sure you get there without a fuss. Sure, hopping on a magical sleigh sounds fun, but you have some other options to consider. Like getting there by car, shuttle, bus, or train.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to get there:

    Flying to Leavenworth

Unfortunately, you can’t fly directly into Leavenworth.

Your best option is to land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). Then it’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Seattle to Leavenworth.

There is a smaller airport, Pangborn Memorial Airport, in East Wenatchee, about 30 miles from Leavenworth. But you can only fly there domestically, and there are limited flights from Seattle, so most visitors just stick with flying into SEA and then drive to Leavenworth.

Upon landing in Seattle, you can easily rent a car to make the scenic drive or you can catch the Bus or hire a shuttle.

    Driving to Leavenworth

If you live within driving distance, just pop “Leavenworth, Washington” into your maps app and hit the road.

But if you’re like most people, you’ll probably be driving from Seattle. The trip usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, and you have two different routes to choose from.

The most popular route is via Highway 2, which takes you through Stevens Pass—a scenic, mountainous drive with great views.

But, If you prefer a less mountainous option, you can take I-90 to Cle Elum and then head north on Highway 97. This route is slightly longer but can be a better option during snowy conditions.

    Taking The Bus From Seattle

If driving yourself over a mountain pass in the winter doesn’t sound fun, then you can take the Bus.

Amtrak and Northwestern Trailways only run two buses a day from downtown Seattle to Leavenworth, WA. This is the cheapest option and takes about 3-4 hours.

The morning bus will arrive at Leavenworth’s Icicle Station around 12:30, and the afternoon bus will arrive around 7:30 p.m.

Insider Tip: The bus station is not at the airport. To get to the bus at the Amtrak/King Street Station from the airport, you can take the Central Link Light Rail to downtown Seattle or catch a taxi or Uber. I highly recommend just taking an Uber for no fuss!

    Hire a Shuttle to Seattle

If you’re like me and buses are just not your thing because you get really motion-sick whenever you ride one, then just hire a shuttle! It might cost you a little extra, but trust me, it’s well worth it!

Leavenworth has two shuttle services you can hire:

    Taking the Train to Seattle

If you’re looking for an Eco-friendly transportation option, take theAmtrak Cascades train. It leaves Seattle’s King Street Station and takes you to Leavenworth’s Icicle Station on the edge of town.

The train ride takes about 3-5 hours, but the journey is a gorgeous scenic adventure through the Cascade Mountains!

Insider Tip: You’ll want to sit on the north side of the train heading to Leavenworth, WA, to get the best views. But you can also head up to the train’s special observation car, which is open to everyone on the train.

Once you arrive in Leavenworth, you’ll want to schedule a shuttle or taxi from the Icicle Station to your accommodation when you reach Leavenworth. The train station is on the outskirts of town, and you probably won’t want to walk to your hotel in the snow and cold with all your luggage when you arrive.

Be sure to arrange this before you leave Seattle!
