Is Colmar Even Worth a Day Trip from Strasbourg?
Yes—100% yes!
Colmar is super close to Strasbourg, only about 30 minutes by train, which makes it one of the easiest (and most popular) day trips you can take. It’s small, walkable, and absolutely packed with charm.
This is exactly how I visited Colmar.
I left Strasbourg early in the morning and spent the whole day exploring. If you really want to make the most of it, I recommend doing the same. Getting there early means you can enjoy the picturesque streets before the crowds show up.
And try to stay until after dark if you can. When the sun goes down and the lights turn on, Colmar becomes pure magic—especially during the holiday season. Don’t rush back too soon, or you’ll miss the best part!
Key Note: I did this day trip on my own from Strasbourg, but if you don’t like the idea of navigating the trains and figuring out all the logistics yourself, then I highly recommend you consider this guided day trip to the Alsatian Villages and Colmar Christmas Markets. It’ll be way less stressful.

The Perfect One-Day Itinerary in Colmar from Strasbourg
When I did my day trip to Colmar from Strasbourg, it was right in the middle of the holiday season. The whole town was glowing with lights, and it honestly felt like I had stepped into a Christmas postcard.
Even though I only had one day, I was able to see so much without feeling rushed. If you’re thinking of doing the same, this itinerary will help you make the most of your time and catch all the best spots—without the stress of figuring it out on the fly.

Snap a Pic with The Colmar Sign
If you’re arriving in Colmar by train like I did, the Colmar sign will probably be the first thing you see on your short 10 min walk into the old city center.
You’ll pass right by it, so it’s the perfect spot to stop and snap a quick photo. It’s a fun little “I was here” moment.

Join a Walking Tour
One of the first things I always do in a new city—especially one as charming and historic as Colmar—is join a walking tour. There’s just something about hearing the stories behind the buildings, learning a bit of the local history, and getting fun facts from someone who actually lives there that makes the whole place come alive.
That’s exactly what I did in Colmar, and it made such a difference. I recommend this Unusual Walking Tour with a Local Guide—it only takes about an hour or two, but it gave me such a good feel for the town. Plus, I walked away with a few insider tips I wouldn’t have found on my own.
After the tour, I felt way more confident exploring on my own. It’s a small investment of time, but totally worth it to get your bearings and make the rest of your day go a lot smoother.

See The Pfister House
You really can’t miss the Pfister House. It’s one of the most recognizable buildings in all of Colmar.
Built back in the 1500s, it’s a stunning mix of wood and stone with colorful murals and a beautiful wraparound balcony that looks straight out of a fairytale.
What’s so cool is that it was one of the first houses in Colmar to combine medieval and Renaissance styles, which was pretty bold for its time.
I stood there for a while just admiring all the little details—the painted panels, the ornate woodwork, even the little turret on the corner. Definitely worth a quick stop (and a few photos!) before you keep exploring.

Wander Through La Petite Venice
La Petite Venice was hands-down my favorite part of Colmar.
This little neighborhood is the most photogenic spot in town, and it’s easy to see why. Colorful half-timbered houses line the calm canals, and every corner feels like it was made for a postcard.
I loved wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, crossing little bridges, and peeking into tucked-away courtyards.
Even in the busy holiday season, it still felt peaceful and magical. If you’re looking for that classic Colmar charm, this is where you’ll find it.
Take your time here—there’s no need to rush.

Take a Boat Ride
One of the absolute highlights of my day in Colmar was taking a boat ride on the canal through La Petite Venice.
Even in the winter, it’s such a peaceful and fun way to see the town from a different angle. You’ll glide along the quiet canals with all those colorful half-timbered houses reflecting in the water.
You don’t need to book in advance—just head over to the small dock area in Petite Venice, right next to the super picturesque bridge on Rue Turenne (I’ve linked the exact spot on Google Maps so it’s easy to find). That’s where you’ll pay and get in line.
I arrived around 10 a.m. and only waited about 20 minutes.
If you’re traveling solo like I was, try to sit at the back of the boat. The boat operators are super friendly and offered to take my photo—which turned out to be one of my favorites from the trip.
It’s a short ride, but such a fun and beautiful way to see Colmar. Definitely don’t skip it!

Visit The Christmas Markets
The real reason I wanted to visit Colmar from Strasbourg was for the Christmas markets.
I was doing a Christmas market tour through Europe, and I kept hearing that Colmar was an absolute must during the holiday season. And let me tell you—it did not disappoint.
There are six different markets scattered throughout the old town, but honestly, the whole place is so decked out with lights, garlands, and festive decorations that it feels like one giant Christmas village.
The markets are all within easy walking distance, and half the time, you can’t even tell where one ends and the next begins. I loved just wandering and letting myself get swept up in the holiday magic.
Compared to the markets in Strasbourg, the ones in Colmar felt smaller, cozier, and more authentic. Don’t get me wrong—Strasbourg is beautiful—but Colmar had this warm, storybook charm that made it my favorite. If you’re visiting during the holidays, you have to experience it.

Eat at The Gourmet Market
Speaking of Christmas markets, you absolutely can’t miss the gourmet food market in Colmar.
By this point in my trip, I was honestly getting a little tired of the usual market food—you know, the same fried snacks and sausages over and over again. But Colmar totally surprised me. The food here felt way more elevated, especially at the gourmet market set up under the giant Ferris wheel.
There were at least six different chefs, each serving up their best take on street food. I ended up going with this lasagna-style pasta dish that was warm, filling, and exactly what I needed on a chilly winter day.
And then, of course, when I spotted the oyster and champagne booth… well, I couldn’t resist. I mean, when in France, right?
What I loved most was how unique the options were—still festive, but way more exciting than the usual fare. Definitely show up hungry!

Get Lost in The Side Streets
After filling up on delicious bites from the gourmet market, it’s the perfect time to slow down and walk it off by getting lost in Colmar’s side streets.
Some of my favorite moments from the day happened when I wandered away from the main squares and just let myself explore the quiet cobblestone lanes.
Even during the busy Christmas season, I found peaceful little corners with hardly anyone around. It gave me a totally different feel for the town—calmer, more local, and honestly kind of magical. If you want to escape the crowds and see a softer side of Colmar, this is the way to do it.
It also gave me a glimpse of what life here might’ve been like before it became such a popular destination. So take your time, don’t follow a map, and just see where the streets take you.

Pop into Some Local Shops for Some Shopping
One of the things I really enjoyed about Colmar was how good the shopping was without feeling overly touristy. As I wandered through the old town, I found a mix of cozy boutiques and artisanal shops that felt super local and charming.
I popped into this one little boutique and ended up buying the softest sweater I’ve ever owned. Even though I had no room in my suitcase, I couldn’t resist! I also stopped into a few specialty food shops and picked up some local wine, cheese, and cured meats to bring back with me to my hotel for a late-night snack.
Of course, there are also the more touristy spots, especially the ones selling Christmas ornaments and decorations. But honestly, I’m a total sucker for Christmas ornaments, so you know one came home with me.
Whether you’re after something unique or just want a festive keepsake, be sure to pop into some of Colmar’s shops.
Dinner at L’Arpège
For dinner, I ate at L’Arpège, a little hidden gem in the center of Colmar’s old town.
What I loved most was the outdoor courtyard. It’s surrounded by old timbered houses and was all lit up with twinkly lights for the holidays. It felt super cozy and romantic and the enchanting garden atmosphere felt like a dream.
The food was delicious, too.
You do need a reservation here, though. I booked mine the day before—and I’m really glad I did. This place fills up fast!

Wander the Streets after Dark!
Last but definitely not least—please stay in Colmar until after dark.
Once the sun sets and the Christmas lights come on, the whole town turns into a real-life fairytale. The buildings glow, the canals sparkle with reflections, and it feels like pure holiday magic.
Even better… Most of the day-trippers head back to Strasbourg by evening, so the streets are quieter and way more peaceful. You can really soak it all in without the crowds.
And if you’re worried about catching the train back—don’t be. The last train to Strasbourg is usually around 11:00 p.m., so you have plenty of time to enjoy the town after dark without feeling rushed.
It was honestly my favorite part of the day. Don’t miss it!
If You Only Have 4 Hours, Do These 5 Things
Short on time? No worries—you can still see the very best parts of Colmar in just a few hours. If you only have half a day, here are the top five things I recommend fitting in:
✅ Wander Through La Petite Venice
✅ Take a Boat Ride
✅ Visit The Christmas Markets
✅ Get Lost in The Side Streets
✅ Admire the Architecture
Other Popular Things to Do in Colmar if You Have More Time
I really wish I had more time to explore beyond the town center—there’s so much more to see and do in and around Colmar.
While one day is enough to experience the highlights, I found a few extra activities that I definitely want to try next time. And yes, there will be a next time—I’m already planning a return trip with my mom, who I just know will fall in love with Colmar the second she sees it.
If you’ve got an extra day or two, here are a few experiences worth adding to your list:

Go on a Wine Tour
The Alsace region is known for its delicious white wines and stunning vineyard, and what better way to enjoy both than on a wine tour from Colmar? If you’re even a little bit into wine, this would be such a fun and scenic day out.
Visit 3 Countries in One Day
How often can you say you’ve had lunch in France, coffee in Germany, and dessert in Switzerland—all in the same day? This day tour to three countries is such a unique experience and a great way to explore more of the region without having to plan the logistics yourself.
Enjoy a Unique Beer Spa Experience!
If you’re looking for something a little different (and a lot of fun), check out this Beer Spa just outside Colmar.
Yes, you literally soak in a warm tub filled with beer ingredients—while sipping on cold brews at the same time. It’s great for relaxing after a busy travel day and makes for a really fun memory. This is high on my list for next time!

Tips For a Day Trip to Colmar
A day trip to Colmar is pretty simple to plan, but a few little tips can make it even better.
These are the things I learned from my own experience that helped my day go smoothly and made it way more enjoyable. Hopefully they’ll help you, too!
You Don’t Need a Car
Good news—you absolutely don’t need a car to visit Colmar. The train from Strasbourg drops you off just a 10-minute walk from the old town, where all the markets, shops, and sights are.
Colmar is actually pretty small and super walkable, which makes exploring really easy. Driving around, trying to park, and navigating narrow streets would just slow you down.
Train travel is not only easier, but honestly, it’s my favorite way to get around Europe.
Pro Tip: I recommend booking your train tickets on Omio which is super easy to use and lets you compare times and prices. But if Colmar is just one stop on a longer European trip, it might be worth looking into a Eurail Pass to save money and keep things flexible.
Get There Early To Make The Most of It
If you want to beat the crowds and see the town at its quietest, get there early. I caught the train around 7:30 a.m. and arrived in Colmar just after 8.
It gave me time to explore the town while it was still peaceful, take photos without to many people in them, and ease into the day before the markets and tours got busy.
Totally worth the early start!
Shorter Daylight Hours in Winter
If you’re visiting during the winter like I did, keep in mind that daylight hours are short—especially in December.
The sun was already setting by 4 pm, so plan your outdoor sightseeing for earlier in the day. That way, you don’t miss anything while it’s still light out!
Reservations are a must
If you plan on eating dinner in Colmar (which I definitely recommend), make a reservation.
Places fill up fast in the evening, especially during the holiday season. I made mine for L’Arpège a day in advance while I was sitting on the train, and I’m so glad I did. Don’t wait until the last minute!
Try to Stay One Night!
If your schedule allows it, I highly recommend staying overnight in Colmar.
Once the day trippers and tour groups leave, the town quiets down and becomes even more magical. It’s cozy, romantic, and has this peaceful charm that’s hard to describe.
If you do stay the night, be sure to check out my post where I share the best places to stay in Colmar—it’ll help you pick somewhere just as dreamy as the town itself.

Getting From Strasbourg to Colmar
Getting from Strasbourg to Colmar is super easy.
I went by train, which is not only the fastest option, but also my favorite way to travel around Europe—especially in France, where the train system is reliable and simple to use.
Trains between Strasbourg and Colmar run usually every 30 minutes to an hour.
The ride itself only takes about 30 minutes, and you don’t need to reserve a seat ahead of time. You’ll be on a regional TER train, which is included if you’re using a Eurail Pass.
I took the 7:30 a.m. train, which got me into Colmar just after 8:00 a.m.—perfect timing to enjoy the quiet streets before the crowds arrived. Tickets are affordable, usually around €10-15 each way, and you can book them easily on Omio.
Once you arrive at the Colmar train station, it’s about a 10-minute walk straight into the old town. No need for taxis or buses—just follow the signs and enjoy the easy walk.
