Solid Toiletries for Travel That Actually Work (and Save So Much Space)

Ever had TSA pull your bag aside, only to toss your favorite face wash or sunscreen because it was just over the liquid limit? Ugh, same.

After traveling to 33+ countries (most of them with nothing more than a carry-on), I’ve completely reworked my toiletry game. These days, I’ve ditched almost every liquid in my bag and found solid options that actually work (and in some cases, work even better). If you’ve been hunting for the best solid toiletries for travel, you’re in the right place.

This post is mainly for carry-on travelers, anyone tired of leaky bottles, and who wants to breeze through TSA. I’ll show you the exact solid products I use and trust—from hair care to skincare and even bug spray.

So if you’re ready to lighten your load, cut the clutter, and finally find toiletries that travel as well as you do, keep reading.

The Best Solid Toiletries for Travel to Replace Your Liquids

Okay, let’s get into the good stuff… my go-to solid travel toiletries that have fully replaced their liquid counterparts. I’ve tested a lot, and these are the ones that made the cut and earned their permanent spot in my travel bag.

And they make great gifts for frequent travelers if you’re shopping for someone who’s always on the go.

    Solid Shampoo & Conditioner Bars

I use Ethique shampoo and conditioner bars, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much. But they actually work great. They lather well, leave my hair clean, and last way longer than I thought they would.

I have long but fine hair, and these bars don’t dry it out. I only wash my hair about twice a week, and these keep my hair fresh between washes, no problem.

Pro tip: I keep them in a silicone soap travel case to help them last longer, and I only cut off the amount I’ll need for each trip to save even more space.

    Dry Shampoo Powder

This is hands down my all-time favorite dry shampoo powder. And trust me, I’ve tried them all.

It soaks up oil without any white residue, gives my hair a nice little volume boost, and smells amazing. Plus, it comes in a small, travel-friendly bottle that fits perfectly in my bag.

    Bar Face Soap

I used to hate bar soap on my face—too drying, always broke me out. But the Good Molecules bar completely changed my mind.

It’s super gentle, doesn’t strip my skin, and my breakouts have actually improved a lot since switching. I use it at home now and not just when I’m traveling, that’s how much it’s impressed me.

    Eye Makeup Eraser Cloth

I haven’t used liquid makeup remover or oils in years, thanks to this magical little cloth.

Just add water and wipe your face. This cloth takes off all my makeup, even waterproof mascara. It’s super gentle, reusable, and works like magic. Total game-changer.

PS. This is the OG eraser cloth. Don’t even bother with the other knock-off ones. Trust me!

    Body Wash Sheets

These Sea to Summit pocket body wash sheets are a newer find, and I really like them, especially when I’m staying somewhere remote where body wash isn’t provided or when I’m road tripping and camping too.

I usually use 2-3 sheets per shower. They lather up well and save me from packing a big bottle.

    Toothpaste Chewables

These toothpaste chewables took some getting used to, but now I’m hooked. I’ve tested a bunch, and finally found a favorite. They’re perfect for a quick refresh—even when I can’t brush. No paste, no mess.

    Mouthwash Strips

These little strips are super handy, especially on long flights. They’re strong (like whoa), but they work. I always keep a few in my personal item bag to freshen up before landing.

    Solid Foundation

I switched to a solid foundation before I became a traveler, and never looked back. My favorite is the Jane Iredale Pressed Mineral Foundation—it’s perfect for my sensitive, slightly oily skin. Once I tried it 8 years ago, I never tried anything else. It’s that good.

PS. Be sure to get the compact, refillable case!

    Tinted Face Sunscreen Powder

I love the Colorescience tinted sunscreen powder for no-makeup days or reapplying over makeup. It gives just the right amount of tint and a soft matte finish, and it never breaks me out. I’ve used this for years, and it’s still the only face sunscreen I pack.

    Mini Deodorant Bars

I really like Native’s mini deodorants! They’re all natural, actually effective, and come in so many fun scents. Plus, the mini versions are so cute and take up no space in my toiletry bag.

    Shaving Bar

If you’re someone who prefers shaving with cream (I totally do), you’ll love this shaving bar. It lathers well and gives you a nice, smooth shave. I shave off a chunk of it for longer trips when I know I’ll need to shave at some point.

    Sunscreen Stick

I switched from lotion and spray sunscreens to a solid sunscreen stick and haven’t looked back. I like the Neutrogena stick because it’s not greasy, has no white cast, and provides great protection.

I haven’t used it on my face (I’m picky), but my husband does, and he likes it!

    Lotion Stick

This is a new obsession of mine! I even use it when I’m not traveling.

This solid lotion glides on smoothly, rubs in easily, and there’s zero chance of a messy lotion explosion in your bag. Win-win.

It’s especially great for packing for winter adventures when the air is dry and freezing.

    Bug Repellent Balm

I first bought this for hiking, but now I bring it on every trip where I know mosquitoes could be an issue.

It takes a tiny bit more effort to apply, but it works amazingly well without being greasy. Perfect for tropical trips, camping, or outdoor adventures.

Other Travel Toiletries That Save Space and Reduce Waste

Beyond the basics, these are my favorite space-saving extras that help me pack lighter, reduce waste, and still feel fresh and put together on the road.

    Laundry Detergent Sheets

I like to pack fewer clothes and do laundry mid-trip. These laundry detergent sheets are great for sink washes. Just pack a few sheets in a Ziploc bag, then tear off what you need for your wash. One sheet lasts me about three sink washes.

    Heatless Hair Curler

Okay, not exactly a toiletry but a serious space-saver.

I ditched the curling iron and now only use this heatless robe curler. I put it in at night, sleep in it, and wake up with curls that last all day. No heat, no hairspray, no bulk. It’s a packing dream.

    Period Cup

I had to include this. Doesn’t replace a liquid, but it saves so much space and waste.

I switched to a period cup three years ago on a friend’s recommendation and haven’t looked back. It’s more comfortable, hygienic, and perfect for travel.

    Best Toiletry Bag

After trying out way too many terrible bags, I finally found my favorite toiletry bag. It’s clear (so I can see everything), folds up small, hangs (a must in Europe), and has a detachable liquids section for easy airport security.

It’s the one I recommend every time.

I also shared more of my favorite travel accessories for women in this post if you’re looking to level up your packing game.

What Counts as a Liquid for Travel?

It can sometimes be confusing as to what is considered a “liquid.” TSA rules can be weirdly specific. So let me try to be more specific for you…

    Liquids include:

    • Gels (like hair gel or aloe vera)
    • Creams and lotions
    • Pastes (like toothpaste)
    • Sprays and aerosols
    • Oils and serums
    • Liquid makeup (foundation, concealer, gloss, etc.)

If it squeezes, sprays, or spreads—TSA likely counts it as a liquid.

    What’s not a liquid?

    • Bar soap
    • Shampoo and conditioner bars
    • Powder-based products (like dry shampoo or sunscreen powder)
    • Solid stick deodorant & lotion
    • Toothpaste tablets
    • Makeup wipes or eraser cloths
    • Anything solid that doesn’t slosh, leak, or pour

Why Switch to Solid Toiletries for Travel

Besides just being so much easier, solid toiletries offer a ton of benefits when you’re on the go. Here’s why I made the switch and never looked back.

    Get Through Airport Security Faster

No more worrying about quart-sized bags, liquid limits, or TSA tossing your favorite items. With solids, I breeze through security. No stress. No delays. Just peace of mind and more time to grab a snack or enjoy the lounge before boarding.

    Reduce Space in Luggage

I travel with just a carry-on luggage, no matter how long the trip. Solid toiletries take up way less space, and I can pack only what I need.

    Not as Messy

Leaky bottles are so annoying! Solids are way less messy—just make sure your bars are dry before you pack them. They will last longer.

    Save Money

Solid products last. My shampoo bar, for example, easily outlasts a liquid shampoo. That means fewer replacements and more money for coffee, excursions, or treating yourself on the road.

    More Eco Friendly

Less plastic waste, less packaging, and fewer chemicals. Solids are better for the planet and your body. It’s one of the easiest swaps you can make to travel more sustainably.

    Saves Weight

Every ounce counts when you’re living out of a backpack or carry-on. Solid toiletries are more lightweight and customizable than liquid toiletries. You can cut down bars to the exact amount you need for your trip.
