When you visit Leavenworth during the holiday season, there are endless winter activities to enjoy. Whether you’re into outdoor fun or cozying up by the fire, this Bavarian village has something for everyone. Here are 19 fun things to do while you’re there!

1. Horse Drawn Carriage Rides

Taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through downtown Leavenworth is a must during the winter months. You’ll be whisked around the charming village, passing by Front Street Park and the twinkling Christmas lights that make this Bavarian town feel like a real-life snow globe.

The rides start in the center of downtown, right in front of the gazebo, and they typically cost around $40 for a 15-20-minute ride. It’s a magical way to soak in the festive atmosphere while bundled up in a cozy blanket.

Pro Tip: Remember to bundle up and pack a thermos with some hot mulled wine or cocoa to keep warm during the ride!

2. Take in The Christmas Lights

Leavenworth transforms into the “Village of Lights” during the holiday season, with over half a million twinkling lights illuminating the entire town square.

The lighting ceremony happens over three weekends in December. With the flick of a switch, the entire village lights up, casting a magical glow on everything around. It’s one of the most enchanting experiences in Leavenworth in winter.

Even if you miss the main event, the lights stay up from Thanksgiving weekend through the end of February, so you can enjoy the festive atmosphere long after the holidays.

Wandering through the glowing streets, especially after fresh snowfall, makes you feel like you’re walking in a winter wonderland!

Pro Tip: Be sure to check the Christmas Calendar for exact dates and details.

3. Christmas Shopping in Downtown Leavenworth

Wandering through downtown Leavenworth during the holidays is like stepping into a Hallmark Movie. The streets, lined with charming half-timbered buildings, are packed with holiday stores that make window shopping irresistible. You’re sure to find something special, whether it’s handmade ornaments, Bavarian gifts, or festive decor.

Some of my favorite spots were Kris Kringl, a three-floor Christmas wonderland where you’ll find every decoration you could possibly imagine, and Garnishes Boutique, a unique shop with a delightful surprise in the back—a chocolate store! We grabbed a box of their chocolates for the drive home, and it was absolutely worth it!

A hearty German meal featuring a breaded schnitzel topped with a mushroom gravy, served alongside spätzle, red cabbage, and a cucumber garnish. The dish is presented on a rustic plate, highlighting the rich flavors and traditional Bavarian cuisine.

4. Eat Bavarian Food

One of my favorite reasons for visiting Leavenworth is the Bavarian food—it’s hearty, comforting, and so damn delicious!

During the holidays, the restaurants here go all out, offering traditional German food that will leave you craving more. From sausage and schnitzel to pretzels and beer, you’ll get a true taste of Germany right here in Washington. Trust me, the food is so good that you’ll be planning your next meal before you even finish your first.

Many restaurants require a reservation, so you’ll want to book ahead, or you might end up stuck with takeout (and you don’t want that!).

My husband and I practically ate our way through the town, and our favorites were Larch Restaurant and Andreas Keller. I’m not kidding when I say I had one of the best meals of my life at Larch—just thinking about it makes my mouth water! And if you’re up for a beer and a wiener, Rein Haus has the best!

With all the great food around, you won’t be disappointed.

5. Grab a Cup of Coffee from The Cutest Coffee Shop

Little Reds Espresso and Bakery is the cutest coffee shop I ever did see!

Located right off Front Street, it’s the perfect spot to warm up with a freshly brewed coffee, a specialty espresso drink, or even a cozy cup of hot chocolate. They also have a delicious selection of baked goods, so be sure to grab a treat while you’re there.

And, they will leave you funny little notes on your coffee cup! Who knows what they might say!

So be sure to stop in for a quick coffee break at this little gem. It’s sure to make your Leavenworth winter experience even sweeter!

6. Soak in Natural Hot Springs

For a truly magical winter experience, head to Scenic Hot Springs, located about 50 minutes outside Leavenworth near Stevens Pass.

These three steaming tubs overlook a thick forest of Ponderosa Pines with the majestic CascadeMountains as your backdrop. It’s a peaceful escape where you can soak while being surrounded by snow-covered trees, making it one of your favorite things to do during your winter trip.

Keep in mind that Scenic Hot Springs is on private property, so you’ll need to make a reservation in advance—only ten people are allowed in at a time.

It’s a bit of an adventure to get there, with about a 1.5-hour uphill hike, so be sure to prepare for snow (snowshoes are a good idea if there’s fresh snow). Once you get there, you’ll agree the effort was totally worth it!

It’s $10 per person (PayPal only).

Pro Tip: Besides snowshoes, don’t forget to pack a thermos of hot cocoa and peppermint snaps to enjoy while soaking!

7. Go Downhill Skiing

For skiing or snowboarding near Leavenworth, Stevens Pass is going to give you your best skiing. Just a 45-minute drive west of town along Highway 2, this popular resort has 52 major runs with a great mix of terrain for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.

If you’re looking for something a bit more low-key, the Leavenworth Ski Hill is literally minutes from downtown Leavenworth. It offers a couple of fun ski runs and a tubing hill for some extra winter fun. An adult day pass is only $29, making it a great budget-friendly activity.

Pro Tip: Plan your visit on a weekday so you can avoid the crowds. If weekends are your only option, be sure to get there early to snag a parking spot and hit the slopes before everyone else. And don’t forget to buy your lift tickets online in advance to skip the long line!

The view from a horse-drawn sleigh ride, with two black horses leading the way through a snow-covered trail surrounded by frosty trees. The peaceful, wintry landscape creates a serene and magical atmosphere. Taking a sleigh ride is one of the quintessential things to do in Leavenworth in winter.

8. Take a Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride

I had the most magical time with Leavenworth Sleigh Rides!

First, we drove along the Chumstick Highway to the cozy lodge, where the adventure began. The sleigh ride took us through a winter wonderland of snow-covered forests and meadows, lasting about 40-50 minutes.

At the midway point, we stopped at a rustic barn to warm up with some hot apple cider by an open fire. The whole experience was fun and romantic, and the beautiful scenery was unforgettable.

There are three sleigh options to choose from. You can ride in a larger old-fashioned sleigh or in Santa’s Sleigh, both pulled by two horses. Or, you can reserve a private ride in a one-horse open sleigh that holds up to six people.

We went with Santa’s Sleigh, reserving the front row for $110, which seats four. It was an experience I highly recommend for anyone looking to create lasting winter memories.

Pro Tip: Be prepared for the cold by layering up, bringing a hat and gloves, and carry your own blankets—one to sit on and another to snuggle under, since the sleighs don’t provide them. For the best experience, opt for a front-row reservation to enjoy the best views and a more intimate ride.

a festive winter evening in Leavenworth, with people gathered around a park filled with vibrant, illuminated trees in red, purple, and white lights. The snow-covered ground and glowing trees create a magical holiday scene.

9. Go Sledding

There are plenty of spots for sledding in Leavenworth, and one of the most popular is right in the town square at Front Street Park. You can sled down the small hill under all the twinkling Christmas lights, making it a magical experience, especially at night. If you can, bring your own sled because the ones for sale nearby are pricey, and the selection is limited. It’s a fun and easy way to enjoy the snow without leaving downtown Leavenworth.

For a more low-key option, check out the Waterfront Park sledding hill. Just head down 9th Street and hang a left at the T in the road, and you’ll find a great spot that’s a little more under the radar.

You can also hit the sledding hill at the Leavenworth Ski Hill for a 90-minute session at $20 per person.

Savoring a beer at one of Leavenworth's outdoor beer gardens is a relaxing and enjoyable thing to do in Leavenworth in winter, offering a taste of Bavarian culture even in the colder months.

10. Sample German Beer

How could Leavenworth live up to its Bavarian theme without some good German beer?

If you love beer, you’ve got to try the German brews here—some of the mugs are as big as my head, and you’ll want to drink every last drop.

Many of the breweries have outdoor patios, where you can sit under heat lamps or by fire pits and watch horse-drawn buggies trot through downtown Leavenworth.

My husband and I tried nearly every beer garden and brewery in town, and here are our favorites:

Icicle Brewing Company is at the top of our list—cozy atmosphere, delicious craft beers, and the perfect spot to enjoy the snowy scene.

Gustav’s Grill and Beer Garden offered a laid-back outdoor space with heat lamps and gas fire pits, which kept us toasty warm.

And if you want unbeatable views of the town square, grab a seat at Rein Haus. We loved sitting by the fire pits, watching the snowfall, and soaking in the winter wonderland vibe—it was pure magic!

This cozy, picturesque winery was featured in the Hallmark Christmas movie Cloudy with a Chance of Christmas. With its romantic vibes and stunning views of the surrounding mountains, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a holiday movie yourself. It’s the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the festive vibes.

If you’d prefer to stay closer to town, there are plenty of great wine-tasting spots in Leavenworth without the need to drive.

12. Visit Santa’s Reindeer at The Reindeer Farm

Visiting the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm was hands down my favorite thing to do in Leavenworth!

Meeting Santa’s reindeer up close was like being a kid on Christmas morning. You get to feed them, pet them, and even touch their antlers—it’s amazing how friendly they are, and their big feet are kind of adorable. It’s such a fun and magical experience, and it really brings out the holiday spirit.

The farm also has a big Christmas gift shop packed with festive goodies, and I even got to snap a picture with Santa himself. And there are tons of cute photo opportunities, including a one-horse open sleigh.

Plus, it’s a great place to learn about reindeer. They’ll tell you about their habitats and their role in holiday traditions. You really can’t visit Leavenworth without making a stop here!

Pro Tip: Try to book the early reservation while the reindeer are still hungry and active for the best photos. Later in the day, they’re more likely to lie down and nap. And don’t forget to take plenty of reindeer selfies!

13. Take a Snowmobile Tour

For an exciting winter sports adventure, try one of the snowmobile tours offered by Leavenworth Snowmobile, based out of Mountain Springs Lodge in the nearby town of Plain. With over 150 miles of trails to explore, it’s the perfect way to experience the snowy wonderland around Leavenworth.

Tours range from 1 to 3 hours, so you can choose the option that fits your schedule and adventure level. Don’t worry! They provide all the gear you’ll need, including a snowsuit, gloves, boots, and a helmet, so you’ll stay toasty warm and ready to hit the trails.

To get to Lake Wenatchee State Park, it’s a quick 30-minute drive from Leavenworth. Just head west on Highway 2 and take a right onto Highway 207 toward the lake. It’s an easy drive, and you’ll see signs along the way.

The roads are typically well-maintained in the winter, but be sure to check for any snow or ice conditions before you go.

If you don’t have your own gear, Der Sportsman in Leavenworth is a great local spot to rent snowshoes or cross-country ski equipment.

Pro Tip: If you stay at the Linderhof Inn or the Enzian Inn, you’ll get free cross-country ski rentals, so take advantage of it and hit the trails!

A serene winter road surrounded by snow-covered pine trees, with the road itself slightly wet from melted snow. The peaceful, scenic drive through the snow-covered forest offers a tranquil winter experience.

17. Warm up on Mulled Wine

Sipping on hot Glühwein is one of the best ways to warm up while you enjoy Leavenworth. The smell of spices and warm wine will lure you in from off the streets. It’s a delicious mix of wine infused with spices like cinnamon sticks, star anise, and orange.

My husband and I tried them all, and we’ve narrowed down the best for you. Here are our favorites:

Bergdorf Cellars needs to be at the top of your wine-tasting adventures in Leavenworth, Washington. They have the best hot Glühwein in town. Trust me, we tried them ALL!

We loved theirs so much that we bought two bottles to take home!

Paterson Cellars Gluhwein was a very close tie to Bergdorf’s. We had a hard time choosing. My husband and I debated this the entire time we were there. We ended up going back every night until we came to our conclusion. LOL!

Goose Ridge Winery is another cozy tasting room right in town. You’ve got to try their white Glühwein—it’s so popular that it was almost always sold out! It took us three attempts to finally get a taste. It’s good, but I personally prefer the red Glühwein.
