The Ultimate One-Week Hawaii Packing List

In this post, I’ll guide you through the essentials with my “One Week Hawaii Packing List.” Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, ensuring you have the right items is key to making the most of your week-long Hawaiian adventure.

    What’s on Your Itinerary?

Before we jump into the specifics of your Hawaii packing list, we need first to discuss what you have on your itinerary.

Your planned activities will have an impact on what you’re going to want to bring.

If your plans involve hiking, jungle activities, or water sports, you will want to add a few more essentials to your Hawaii packing list.

However, if you only envision yourself on a beach vacation when you visit Hawaii, basking in the sun on pristine beaches, then your Hawaii packing list just got much simpler.

Remember, it’s not just a packing list; it’s a strategic game plan, so you come prepared for the unique moments Hawaii has in store for you.

Things to Think About When Packing for Hawaii…

Are you packing carry-on only or not?

Believe it or not, embarking on a seven-day Hawaiian adventure armed with carry-on luggage is only entirely possible and, dare I say, liberating. Embrace the Aloha way by keeping it simple and embracing the island’s laid-back vibe.

Your pared-down Hawaii packing list and choices reflect a commitment to a stress-free journey, inviting serenity and genuine connection into your travel experience.

Tip: Use compression packing cubes to pack clothes. They save space and help keep you organized and stress-free. Nothing gives me travel anxiety more than a messy, wrinkled suitcase!

Or maybe you are the check-it-and-forget-it type, and that is perfectly fine. Consider that there could be extra checked luggage fees and the rate of bags getting lost is on the rise.

Either way, this comprehensive Hawaii Packing List has everything you need. Pack light or pack heavy. I’ve got you covered.

Side note: I fit all this into a carry-on roller suitcase and an Osprey Daylite backpack.

Which Hawaiian Island(s) Are You Visiting?

Each Hawaiian island offers unique experiences, and your Hawaii packing list can be tailored to match your chosen destination, from the bustling cities of Honolulu on Oahu to the untamed landscapes of the NaPali Coast on Kauai and the volcanic allure of the Big Island.

The weather in Hawaii also varies depending on which island you choose. Consider the island’s character when finalizing your own packing list for your Hawaii vacation.

No Need to Worry About Forgetting Something

If you discover you forgot to pack something for your Hawaii trip, leave your worries behind! Embrace the island’s laid-back vibe and use it as an opportunity for a spontaneous shopping adventure.

Hawaii offers a variety of local shops, grocery stores, and markets where you can find everything you need, from aloha shirts to swimwear and sun hats. There is even a Costco on the main Hawaiian Islands.

    Plastic Bag Ban!

Hawaii banned single-use plastic bags, so it might be a good idea to add a reusable shopping bag to your Hawaii packing list if you plan to go to the grocery stores for food and supplies. I used my beach bag as a shopping bag.

Okay, now let’s pack for Hawaii!!

Let’s Break Down Your Hawaii Packing List:

      Travel Documents:

Your bags are packed, the excitement is buzzin’, and you’re almost ready to hit the road.

But wait – have you got your travel documents in order? Showing up to the airport is like showing up to a party without an invitation. Somehow, it happens!

This misstep would throw a serious wrench into your vacation plans. So, let’s avoid this plot twist, grab those essential documents, keep them in an easily accessible spot, and ensure your journey stays on the epic track you planned.

      • ID: Driver’s License, Government-issued ID or Passport (check expiration date)
      • Airline Tickets or E-Tickets
      • Health and Travel Insurance Information
      • Accommodation Details
      • Rental Car Reservation
      • Visa or ESTA Authorization for International Travelers.
      • Printed or Digital Copy of Your Itinerary
      • Emergency Contact Information
      • Any Relevant Medical Information or Prescriptions
      • Credit Cards or Payment Methods
      • Local Maps or Navigation Apps on Your Phone

This list might vary depending on your country of origin, specific travel circumstances, and individual preferences. Please always double-check the requirements and recommendations based on your unique situation before you travel.

This image shows Kate standing in shallow ocean water, with their back turned towards the camera, wearing a sheer white dress that is illuminated by sunlight. The setting captures a peaceful beach moment, with clear turquoise water in the background.

      Light Breathable Clothing:

Hawaii’s warm weather year-round calls for light, breathable, comfortable clothing, preferably wrinkle-proof and quick-dry fabrics to stay fresh. I wouldn’t wear jeans in Hawaii’s heat and humidity.

Casual clothing isn’t just a preference in Hawaii – it’s a way of life.

The islands exude a laid-back atmosphere where comfort and relaxation reign supreme. From the moment you step off the plane, you’ll notice the local Hawaii residents and visitors alike embrace a casual dress code that reflects the island’s carefree spirit.

      • Lightweight Tops (T-shirts, Tanktops, Blouses)
      • Shorts and Skirts
      • Casual Dresses
      • Active Wear (If you want to workout)
      • Lightweight Jacket or Sweater (For cooler evenings)
      • Undergarments
      • Sleepwear
      • Beach Cover-up or Sarong

You don’t need to pack a lot because you’ll often live in your swimsuit. This lets you keep your packing light and embrace the carefree lifestyle. Plus, this means you will have space in your luggage to bring souvenirs home.

This image captures a person with long wavy hair adorned with a white plumeria flower, standing on a grassy landscape overlooking a coastal view. The scene is bathed in soft, golden light with palm trees in the background and dramatic clouds scattering sunlight across the sky

      Dress Clothes:

No matter what you do in Hawaii, the dress code always leans toward comfort. Even resort wear is comfortable casual.

That said, you’ll see a full spectrum of attire when you go out to a nice restaurant or attend a dinner show. Some people will be in formal attire, and the next in Shorts, Hawaiian shirts, and flip-flops. The best part is no one bats an eye. So, if it’s to your fancy, why not toss in a dressier outfit for those special outings?

      • Nice Dress for the Ladies
      • Button Up or Polo and Khakis for the men

      Sunscreen & Shades: Sunny Essentials

The Hawaiian sun is no joke!

Slather on sunscreen like it’s your job!

Make sure you opt for Reef-Safe Sunscreen. Traditional sunscreens can threaten the delicate marine ecosystems Hawaii is known for by introducing harmful toxins that can bleach and damage coral reefs.

Hawaii has banned certain chemicals found in regular sunscreens. So, as you pack your bags, don’t just think about protecting your skin – consider safeguarding Hawaii’s beautiful underwater ecosystems. Or better yet, if you are unsure if yours is reef-safe sunscreen, wait to buy a big bottle when you get there.

Sunglasses and a wide-brim sun hat are more sunny essentials to throw in your pack for Hawaii. These two accessories aren’t just fashion statements but your frontline defense against the island’s intense sun. It’s all about protecting your eyes, face, and neck so you can comfortably enjoy all Hawaii offers.

      • Reef Safe Sunscreen
      • Sunglasses with UV Protection (Polaroid is even better). Foldies are my favorite for travel!
      • Wide Brim Sun Hat. This Packable Sun Hat goes with me everywhere!!
This image shows Kate lounging on a towel in the sand, wearing a vibrant pink bikini and a wide-brimmed sun hat. The backdrop features lush green vegetation, tall palm trees, and dramatic mountains under a cloudy sky, creating a tropical and tranquil beach setting.

      Gear up for Beach Bliss:

Whether you’re catching waves or enjoying your beach vacation by simply lounging on the sand, having the right beach gear in your pack for Hawaii is a must.

Your accommodations will most likely provide you with a beach towel; however, I highly recommend you pack a sand-resistant beach towel or blanket. Sand-resistant beach towels are a game-changer, allowing you to enjoy the beach without the hassle of lugging a suitcase full of unwanted sand home.

Hawaii’s inviting 70-degree waters mean you’ll likely be spending considerable time in the ocean. Packing multiple swimsuits isn’t just a fashion choice – it’s a practical decision. I recommend packing at least two swimsuits. Having an extra swimsuit or two ensures you always have a dry and comfortable option ready, even if you hit the waves multiple times a day.

Packing a beach bag is a smart idea to save you trips back to your hotel room or vacation rental. A beach bag will keep all your beach essentials organized, accessible, and sand-free.

Ultimately, you will always be near water – at the beach, by the pool, stuck in a sudden downpour, or hiking into the rainforest. A waterproof bag or dry bag is essential to protect your electronics or any other valuables.

Last but not least, you should throw a pair of water shoes in your pack for Hawaii! There can be sharp rocks on the ocean floor along the beaches, and having water shoes will protect your feet!

Below is a more comprehensive Hawaii packing list for the beach:

This image captures Kate and her husband mid-air as they jump into clear turquoise water, with dramatic cliffs and lush greenery of Kauai in the background. Kate on the left is wearing a patterned bikini, and her husband on the right is in a blue rash guard, both radiating excitement and energy.

Should You Bring Your Own Snorkel Gear?

This is ultimately up to you. I, however, think that bringing your own snorkeling gear to Hawaii is a wise choice, and here’s why:

🏖️ Relying on rented equipment might limit your comfort and enjoyment. An ill-fitted mask will most likely cause the mask to fog up, blurring your vision and greatly reducing your underwater experience. I’d hate for you to miss the full effect of the stunning coral, brilliant fish, or a cute sea turtle.

🏖️ I know from experience having ill-fitted fins can cause painful blisters, making the rest of your trip miserable!

🏖️ Bringing your own snorkel mouthpiece is just more hygienic! I do not know if it is because I’m a nurse or because we went through a pandemic, but I like to reduce potential exposure, ensuring I stay healthy on vacations.

      • Mask
      • Snorkel
      • Fins
This image Kate sitting on the edge of a cliff overlooking the breathtaking Na Pali coastline in Kauai, with its dramatic green ridges and deep valleys meeting the ocean. The person is wearing a blue cap, white tank top, denim shorts, and hiking shoes, basking in the golden sunlight.

      Footwear Essentials:

You will need three different pairs of shoes at most. Two to pack and one to wear on the plane.

Start with the first shoe of choice, the Flip-flops! Hawaii and flip-flops are a match made in tropical heaven. I’m pretty sure flip-flops are the island’s unofficial footwear, embodying Hawaii’s laid-back spirit. You will live in them almost every day.

For explorations, opt for a versatile pair of water-resistant hiking shoes or hiking boots that can handle both land and water adventures. Depending on what type of hiker you are will determine what type of hiking boot you choose to bring.

I have a pair of Keens and a pair of Merrells I love. They are sturdy for hiking, closed-toed, and waterproof.

Pack a comfortable pair of breathable walking shoes for exploring towns and shopping in the markets. Everyone’s choice of this type of shoe varies.

My preferred comfortable walking shoe is my Birkenstock sandals! I pack a pair on every fair-weathered trip and have comfortably walked countless miles in them. Plus, I think they pair nicely with dresses.

Ladies, leave the high heels at home! You won’t need them.

This image features a person leaning against a palm tree on a pristine white sandy beach, wearing a swimsuit and enjoying the serene tropical setting. The turquoise ocean stretches out in the background, bordered by a distant island and clear skies dotted with soft clouds.

      Perfectly Packed Toiletries:

First, a quick reminder: The TSA liquid rule restricts carrying containers with liquids, gels, and aerosols in quantities exceeding 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) each, all packed within a quart-sized clear resealable plastic bag.

Now that we covered that let’s get into the goodies:

      • Toothpaste
      • Toothbrush
      • Floss Sticks
      • Shampoo and Conditioner (use the free ones in your hotel if you’re not picky)
      • Body Wash or Bar of Soap (probably use the hotel samples)
      • Deodorant
      • Face Wash (if you use something special)
      • Skin Care
      • Face Sunscreen (reef-friendly Zinc Oxide)
      • Makeup (minimal makeup with waterproof mascara)
      • Body Moisturizer
      • Hair Detangler /Leave-in Conditioner!
      • Insect Repellent

      Stay Happy and Healthy:

Write a list of the prescription medications you need.

Budget a bit extra in case of unexpected delays.

Don’t forget to carry the corresponding prescriptions, doctor’s notes, and any necessary documents to facilitate a smooth transition through security.

Keep your medications in their original packaging to avoid confusion and ensure proper dosages.

Tip: Pack your essential medications in your carry-on bag in case of lost luggage.

Pack what I call “Just in case meds” in a travel-sized kit:

      • Pain Relievers (Ibuprofen and Tylenol)
      • Motion Sickness Pills (for boat tours)
      • Allergy Meds
      • Anti-diarrheal Meds
      • Zicam or Airborn

Packing a basic first-aid kit that includes hand sanitizer or antiseptic wipes, Band-aids, and Antibiotic ointment is wise.

Don’t forget a reusable water bottle in your pack for Hawaii to stay hydrated on your adventures in the Hawaiian heat. I also recommend packing a portable neck fan to help keep cool.

By packing these items, you’ll ensure peace of mind from being well-prepared.

This image shows Kate standing on a lush trail overlooking a vibrant turquoise ocean, wearing a backpack and outdoor gear. Surrounded by tropical foliage, they appear to be enjoying the stunning coastal view, capturing the essence of a hiking adventure.

      Hiking Gear:

The specific gear you need in your pack for Hawaii might vary based on the trail difficulty and the weather conditions at your chosen hiking destination. Please always research the hiking trails and pack accordingly to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Here is a List of Hiking Essentials:

      Electronics and Gadgets:

A brief mention to remember to pack your trusty smartphone – your all-in-one lifeline for navigation, taking pictures, and staying connected. Pack a waterproof phone case, too!

I highly recommend packing an underwater camera with a waterproof case! My preferred underwater camera is the GoPro. I have zero regrets investing in my GoPro to capture incredible underwater photos.

If you prefer to read on an e-reader or tablet then pack that, loaded with your favorite books, for quiet relaxing moments.

Keep all devices powered up by packing a portable charger and their charging cords.

If you are coming from outside the United States, you might want to pack an adapter.

      • Smartphone
      • Underwater Camera & Waterproof Case
      • Tablet or E-reader
      • Portable Charger & Cords
      • Adapter

      A Journal:

Packing a Journal not only lets you document the journey but also allows you to carve out space for self-reflection and mindful immersion.

Slowing down to translate your experiences onto paper cultivates an intimate connection with your surroundings. Doing so helps you appreciate the moment and create a keepsake of memories.

This image shows Kate standing on a rocky trail framed by tropical greenery, overlooking a serene beach with golden sand and gentle waves meeting the shore. The scene is bathed in bright sunlight, with the ocean stretching out under a clear blue sky.
