If you’re someone who loves charm, history, and a quieter pace once the markets wind down for the night, this is the spot for you.

It’s also ideal if you plan on taking lots of dreamy photos (which, let’s be honest, you probably will).

The markets in Petite France are smaller and feel more local, which I personally loved. It’s also just far enough from the crowds that you can breathe, but still close enough to walk to everything.

Best for: Couples, cozy vibes, photographers, slower-paced trips, and anyone who wants that storybook setting.

Historic Center (Grand Île)

If you want to be in the heart of it all, the Historic Center is where you want to stay.

This is where you’ll find the Strasbourg Cathedral, the biggest markets, and most of the city’s must-see landmarks all within walking distance.

I’d recommend this area if you want to just roll out of bed and be right in the middle of the action (especially if you’re short on time).

Just keep in mind that it does get very busy, especially in the evenings, but that’s part of the fun.

If you like energy and atmosphere, you’ll love staying here.

This is actually where I stayed.

It’s not super central, but I booked a little late, and the more central hotels were already gone.

Strasbourg at Christmas is nothing short of magical, but it’s also incredibly popular. A little bit of planning really goes a long way to make your trip better.

Here are a few tips I wish someone had told me before my visit. At least I know now for my second trip!

Tip 1: Tip 1: Book Your Hotel Early—Like, Really Early

If there’s one thing I wish I could shout from the rooftops, it’s this: book your Strasbourg hotel as early as possible.

I’m talking months in advance, especially if you want to stay in the charming old town near the Christmas markets. These places book up fast!

As soon as you know your travel dates, start looking. You can always choose a place with free cancellation if you’re still finalizing plans, but waiting too long usually means higher prices or less magical locations.

Tip 2: Consider Booking Fully Refundable Stays

December travel always comes with a little unpredictability. Weather delays, flight cancellations, or just shifting plans can be costly.

To save yourself stress, book fully refundable stays whenever possible. It gives you peace of mind knowing you have flexibility if something changes last minute.

How Many Days Do You Need in Strasbourg?

I spent three days in Strasbourg, and that felt just right. It gave me enough time to enjoy the Christmas markets at a relaxed pace, explore Petite France, climb the Cathedral tower, and even take a day trip to Colmar (which I highly recommend).

If you’re only planning to visit Strasbourg itself, you can squeeze it all in one day, but two days would be better so you don’t feel rushed.

Plus, having that extra day means you can sneak in a tour of the Alsace region or even hop across the border to Basel.

Should I Stay in Strasbourg or Colmar?

Honestly, it depends on the kind of trip you’re dreaming of.

Strasbourg is bigger, livelier, and has more going on—especially in the evenings at the markets.

It’s a great choice if you want plenty of restaurant options, major sights like the cathedral, and easy day trips to nearby towns. This is where I based myself, and I loved being right in the middle of the action.

Colmar and its Christmas markets, on the other hand, feel smaller, quieter, and more like a cozy fairytale village. It’s super walkable and incredibly charming, especially if you’re going for a romantic vibe. I think I might choose to stay here the next time I visit.
