41 Epic Winter Bucket List Ideas for Travel Lovers
I travel year-round, but there’s something extra magical about winter.
The world just feels different when it’s covered in snow — quieter, cozier, and honestly, more adventurous.
Over the years, I’ve spent winter in mountain cabins, wandered through twinkly European towns, gone skiing in Canada, soaked in hot springs in the snow, and even escaped to the Caribbean for some much-needed sunshine.
Winter has become one of my favorite seasons to explore.
Whether I’m bundling up for snowy hikes or swapping boots for flip-flops on a beach, these trips always stick with me. That’s why I put together this list — to share some of the most unforgettable winter travel experiences I’ve had (and a few still on my own bucket list!).
If you’re looking for ideas that go beyond the usual hot cocoa and fuzzy socks — you’re in the right place.
From cozy cabin stays to epic ski trips and magical holiday towns, here are 71 winter bucket list ideas that will inspire your next adventure.
41 Winter Travel Bucket List Ideas You’ll Love
A lot of these I’ve actually done myself, so I can honestly say they’re worth it. And the ones I haven’t are sitting high on my own winter bucket list.
I hope this gives you some fun ideas and helps make winter feel a little less blah and a lot more exciting.
1. Go Ice Skating on a Frozen Lake
There’s something so peaceful and fun about skating on a frozen lake. It feels like winter magic — the cold air on your face, the crunch of blades on ice, and the mountains all around you.
One of my favorite places I’ve skated is Lake Louise in Canada. It’s seriously straight out of a postcard. The lake freezes over, and they even set up a little ice castle. We skated until our toes were frozen, then warmed up with hot cocoa and soaked in the views. Total winter fairytale.
If you ever get the chance to skate on a real frozen lake, do it. It’s way different than a rink — and 100% worth it.
2. Cozy Cabin Getaway
Sometimes the best winter trips are the slow ones. No plans, no crowds, just a warm cabin in the woods and nowhere to be.
Every year around the holidays, my husband and I try to sneak away to a cabin. We’ve found some amazing spots on VRBO — a few even had no cell service, which was honestly kind of perfect. We played games, made soup, watched the snow fall, and just relaxed.
If you’ve been feeling burnt out, this is the kind of trip that resets your soul.
3. Visit Leavenworth, WA at Christmas
If you’ve ever wanted to visit a Christmas market in Europe but don’t want to fly across the ocean — go to Leavenworth.
This little Bavarian-style town in Washington goes all out for the holidays. I’m talking millions of lights, mulled wine, snowy mountains, and cozy Christmas vibes everywhere you turn. It’s one of my favorite winter getaways, hands down.
We wandered the shops, ate way too many pretzels, and took a sleigh ride through the snow. Pure holiday magic.

4. Go on a Christmas Lights Tour
You don’t have to go far for this one — it’s one of my favorite simple winter traditions.
Grab your favorite drink in a to-go mug (hot cocoa, obviously), hop in the car, and drive through town looking at Christmas lights. Bonus points if it’s snowing. We roll the windows down, turn the Christmas music up, and just soak it all in.
It’s one of those little things that feels cozy, nostalgic, and special every single year.
5. Go on a Northern Lights Adventure
Seeing the Northern Lights in real life is something I’ll never forget.
We saw them for the first time in Iceland, and it was absolutely unreal. We stayed up late, bundled up in all the layers, and waited. Then suddenly — there they were. Dancing green lights across the sky.
Photos don’t even come close to how magical it feels in person.
If this isn’t already on your winter bucket list, add it. Whether it’s Alaska, Norway, Finland, or Iceland — pick a spot and go for it. It’s 100% worth it.
6. Visit Christmas Markets in Europe
If you ever get the chance to visit Europe in December — go. Their Christmas markets are next-level.
Strolling through twinkly stalls with a cup of mulled wine in one hand and a warm pretzel in the other? That’s my kind of holiday shopping. Every market has its own charm, and honestly, the vibes are just magical.
We spent a Christmas in Germany a few years ago and still talk about it. The lights, the food, the music — it felt like being inside a snow globe.
7. Stay in an Ice Hotel
Okay — I haven’t done this one yet, but it’s high on my winter bucket list.
My best friend and I are planning a trip to Finland this winter, and I’m pretty sure we’re going to stay in a real ice hotel while we’re there. It’s one of those things that feels so over-the-top in the best way, and honestly, I can’t wait. She’s totally down for this kind of experience, and I just know we’re going to freeze and laugh the whole time.
Everything — the beds, the walls, even the bar — is made out of ice. But don’t worry, they give you warm sleeping bags and gear so you don’t turn into a popsicle overnight.
If you’re curious, here are a few amazing ice hotels worth checking out:
Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel in Norway
SnowHotel in Rovaniemi, Finland
ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden (the original!)
Hôtel de Glace in Québec, Canada
8. Go Mulled Wine Tasting
I didn’t even know I loved mulled wine until I tried it in Leavenworth.
Now it’s one of my favorite holiday drinks. Warm, spiced, and just sweet enough — it’s like Christmas in a cup.
If there’s a winery near you that does mulled wine tastings, grab your friends and make a night of it. Or try making your own at home — it’s easier than you’d think.
9. Go on an Epic Skiing or Snowboarding Trip
If skiing or snowboarding is your thing, then you already know — nothing beats the feeling of carving down a mountain with fresh snow under your feet and big views all around you.
Some of the most epic places in the world to ski? Definitely Niseko, Japan and Zermatt, Switzerland. I actually had a whole ski trip to Japan planned before the pandemic hit — and then, like so many things, it all got canceled. I still haven’t made it there, but it’s very high on my winter bucket list.
That said, I can totally vouch for skiing in the Canadian Rockies if you’re looking for something a little easier to get to. Fernie, Banff, and Lake Louise are all amazing — the terrain, the views, and the snow are next-level.
If you’re planning a ski trip this year, don’t forget to check out my ski trip packing guide. It has everything you need (plus a few things you might not think of)!
10. Take a Winter Camping Trip
Winter camping sounds kinda crazy at first — I totally get that. I was honestly pretty nervous the first time we went.
But it turned out to be one of the most peaceful, quiet, magical trips we’ve ever taken. There were no crowds, no noise — just us, the trees, and a blanket of fresh snow. We woke up to the softest light coming through the trees, made coffee with frozen fingers, and just slowed down.
If you’re thinking about trying it, bring more layers than you think you’ll need, pack good gear, and definitely don’t skimp on snacks. It takes a little extra prep, but trust me — it’s so worth it.
11. Soak in a Natural Winter Hot Springs
There’s nothing like sitting in a warm, steamy hot spring while snow falls all around you. It’s seriously one of my favorite ways to relax in the winter.
The best place we’ve found for wild hot springs? Stanley, Idaho — hands down.
My husband and I spent a weekend there soaking in nearly a dozen different natural springs. It was like a treasure hunt, and each one was better than the last. Picture soaking in a quiet pool next to a rushing river, with mountain views and no one else around.
If you want to plan your own hot spring adventure, check out my blog post on the Best Stanley Idaho Hot Springs and my Stanley Road Trip Itinerary that takes you right to all the best spots.
It’s cozy, adventurous, and totally magical.
12. Go on a Winter Road Trip
Winter road trips are one of my favorite ways to explore. Pack some snacks, make a solid playlist, and hit the road — there’s just something so freeing about it.
My husband and I have done some epic winter drives, like cruising through Utah’s red rock canyons and weaving through the snowy Canadian Rockies. We’ve found amazing ski towns, hidden hot springs, and the kind of views you have to pull over for.
If you’re new to road tripping or just want to be super prepared, check out my post on How to Plan a Road Trip for all the steps and tips. And don’t miss my Road Trip Packing List — it includes all the essentials, plus a few things you probably haven’t thought of.
Road trips in winter take a little more planning, but they come with way fewer crowds and all the cozy vibes.
We’ve done road trips through Utah and the Canadian Rockies in the winter, and they were incredible. We chased fresh snow, found quiet mountain towns, and pulled over more times than I can count just to take in the view.
The best part? You get to go at your own pace. No airports, no tight schedules — just good snacks, good playlists, and wherever the road takes you.
13. Visit Santa’s Reindeer
This one brings out the kid in me every time.
We visited a reindeer farm in Leavenworth, WA, and it was seriously magical. The snow was falling, the bells were jingling, and we even got to feed the reindeer (they’re super gentle, by the way).
You can also find reindeer farms in other wintery spots — or even go for a sleigh ride in Lapland, Finland. If you’re chasing that cozy holiday feeling, this is such a fun one to check off your list.
14. Go Dog Sledding
This one’s still on my winter bucket list — but it’s happening soon.
I’ve been dreaming of dog sledding in Alaska, hopefully on a glacier if I’m lucky. I mean, how cool would that be?
I love the idea of gliding through snow with a pack of happy, working dogs leading the way. If you’re planning a winter trip somewhere like Alaska, Finland, or Canada — add this one to your list!
15. Take a Polar Plunge
Taking a polar plunge isn’t for the faint of heart — but it’s one of those wild winter experiences you’ll never forget. Whether it’s a lake, river, or even the ocean, jumping into freezing cold water is a thrill like no other.
Some places take it to the next level. They actually cut a big hole into the ice and drop a ladder in for brave swimmers to climb in and out. Here are a few of the most epic spots in the world to take a polar plunge:
- Lake Bled, Slovenia – Beautiful scenery and an annual New Year’s Day plunge
- Oulanka National Park, Finland – Traditional ice swimming with saunas nearby
- Antarctica Cruise Excursions – Yes, you can jump in while sailing around the 7th continent
- Svalbard, Norway – True Arctic conditions and a bucket list setting
A polar plunge is when you jump into freezing cold water in the middle of winter. I haven’t worked up the nerve to do this yet, but I know people who swear it’s the most energizing thing ever.
If you’re brave, this could be your boldest winter memory yet.
16. Plan a winter beach getaway for a change of scenery
Sometimes the best way to do winter… is to escape it entirely.
In Montana, where winters are long and cold, my husband and I have made it a yearly tradition to head somewhere warm each January. Our favorite spot? Belize. The sunshine, the turquoise water, the relaxed pace — it’s everything we need after months of snow.
If you’re looking for a winter reset, swap your snow boots for flip-flops and plan a beach trip. Whether you’re flying international or staying stateside, I’ve rounded up the best warm winter vacations in the USA to help you find the perfect sunny escape.
17. Take a scenic train ride through snowy landscapes
17. Take a Scenic Train Ride Through Snowy Landscapes
There’s something so cozy about being wrapped in a blanket, sipping something warm, and watching the snowy world go by through a train window.
Winter train rides are one of the dreamiest ways to see the season — no driving, no stress, just beautiful views.
A few iconic routes worth adding to your list:
- White Pass and Yukon Route, Alaska – A historic ride through mountains and glaciers
- Glacier Express, Switzerland – Picture-perfect alpine villages and snowy peaks
- Rocky Mountaineer, Canada – Epic scenery from the comfort of a glass-domed train car
All aboard!
18. Visit an ice sculpture festival or competition
It’s amazing what artists can carve out of ice: life-sized castles, fire-breathing dragons, entire glowing cities. If you’ve never seen one in person, add it to your list!
Here are a few of the best ice and snow festivals in the world:
- Harbin International Ice Festival (China) – Gigantic glowing ice structures
- Sapporo Snow Festival (Japan) – Incredible creativity and fun family energy
- Quebec Winter Carnival (Canada) – Classic winter fun with parades, food, and world-class snow art
19. Take a trip to a snowy mountain town
There’s something so charming about a snowy mountain town in winter — cozy cabins, twinkly lights, and that laid-back vibe you can only find in the mountains.
One of my all-time favorites is Banff, Alberta, Canada. The whole place feels like a winter postcard. We wandered the snowy streets, popped into local shops, and even found the perfect little cafe to warm up in.
Whether you’re skiing, soaking in a hot spring, or just enjoying the views, snowy mountain towns are the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
20. Visit a winter nature reserve or wildlife sanctuary
I highly recommend the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It offers an unforgettable wildlife experience—an elk herd numbering in the thousands, seen from a horse-drawn sleigh ride that goes threw the middle of the herd! It’s an incredibly unique perspective on the wonders of winter in the great outdoors.
21. Attend a Hockey Game
Attending a hockey game would be a very fun activity to add to your winter bucket list. The energy, the sound of skates on the ice, and the cheers from passionate fans make it a must-experience event.
Personally, I’ve always wanted to see a Detroit Red Wings game! With my family hailing from Detroit, Michigan, I’ve always felt a special connection to the team.
Let’s go Red Wings! Represent!
22. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day
Winter can be a lot — cold weather, shorter days, holiday chaos. That’s why I think everyone deserves a good spa day.
Whether it’s a fancy resort spa or a simple massage spot in your hometown, carving out time to relax is so important. I love wrapping up in a cozy robe, sipping tea, and letting the stress melt away.
On a recent trip to Prague, I found out about something totally new to me — a beer spa. Yep, you literally soak in a warm bath filled with hops, barley, and beer ingredients (don’t worry, it’s clean and super relaxing). It’s supposed to be great for your skin and circulation.
I tried to book one while I was there, but they were completely full. Darn! Definitely a sign to book ahead if you’re curious.
If you love beer and want a one-of-a-kind spa experience, this is such a fun and cozy idea to add to your winter bucket list.
You’ve earned it.
23. Stay in a Glass Igloo in Lapland, Finland
This one is SO high on my winter bucket list, and I’m finally making it happen soon!
My best friend and I are planning a winter trip to Finland, and we’ve already talked about staying in one of those amazing glass igloos. Imagine falling asleep under the stars, with the Northern Lights dancing overhead — absolutely unreal.
If you’re dreaming of this too, check out places like Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort or Levin Iglut. There are a few beautiful options around Lapland, and they book out early, so plan ahead!
Be sure to add this to your winter bucket list for a unique and magical adventure!
24. Take a Sleigh Ride
Get cozy and feel the winter vibes with a romantic sleigh ride for you and your special someone.
My husband and I took a horse-drawn sleigh in Leavenworth, WA, a place that tops my list for snowy getaways.
Imagine snow-covered forests and the jingle of bells as you glide through the winter wonderland. It’s a moment of winter romance that’s hard to beat. So, bundle up, snuggle close, and let the sleigh bells set the soundtrack for your chilly but charming adventure.
25. Visit New York City at Christmas
NYC at Christmas is something everyone should experience at least once.
From the iconic Rockefeller Center Tree to the incredible window displays on Fifth Avenue, the city comes alive during the holiday season. And, of course, you can’t miss ice skating at Rockefeller Center or exploring the holiday markets.
So, bundle up and soak in the holiday excitement of the Big Apple.
26. Go Out and Celebrate New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve is one of those nights that just feels special. Whether you’re dressing up and heading out, or keeping it cozy at home with a few friends and a bottle of bubbly, it’s worth celebrating.
One of my dream NYE spots is Times Square — I haven’t done it yet, but it’s definitely on the list! Just being surrounded by the energy, the countdown, and that big confetti-filled moment would be unforgettable.
However you ring in the new year, make it fun, make it festive, and cheers to new adventures ahead!
27. Visit Santa Claus Village, Finland
Okay, this is the ultimate Christmas dream spot — and I’m slightly obsessed.
Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finland is one of the most magical winter destinations I’ve ever heard of. I’ve watched so many YouTube videos about it, and every time I see that snowy village and twinkling lights, I want to book a ticket immediately.
You can meet Santa, cross the Arctic Circle, mail a postcard from Santa’s official post office, and soak in all the holiday charm. There are reindeer rides, cozy cabins, and yes — even Christmas saunas.
Whether you’re traveling with kids, your partner, or solo — this is one of those places that brings the magic of Christmas to life.
28. Visit Antarctica, the Ultimate Winter Destination
Antarctica is the wildest, most epic winter destination I can think of — and yep, it’s right at the top of my bucket list.
It’s a place where you’re completely surrounded by ice, ocean, and wildlife. Giant icebergs, curious penguins, total silence — it’s one of the last truly untouched places on Earth.
This isn’t your average vacation, but that’s what makes it so special. It’s a journey for the bold, and I’d love to experience it one day.
Wondering how to even get there? Travel + Leisure has a great guide on visiting Antarctica, from cruises to fly-in tours. Definitely do your research and be ready for the adventure of a lifetime.
29. Experience Winter Ice Climbing
If you’re the type who likes to push your comfort zone, ice climbing is definitely one to try.
You climb frozen waterfalls or icy cliffs using special gear — and yes, it’s as intense and awesome as it sounds. I haven’t tried this one yet, but it’s on my radar. I think it would be such a cool (literally!) way to experience winter in a totally new way.
Places like Ouray, Colorado, Banff, Canada, and parts of Alaska are great for beginners and pros alike.
Add it to your list if you want an adventure that will totally shake up your winter routine.
30. Kayak or paddle board on a Glacier in Alaska
You guys… when I saw this on Instagram, my jaw dropped. I had no idea you could kayak or paddleboard on a glacier — like, right in the crystal-clear melt pools!
It looks surreal. Bright blue water, giant ice all around you, and this quiet, peaceful vibe you can’t find anywhere else.
This is definitely high on my winter travel bucket list now. If you’re headed to Alaska, check out guided glacier paddle tours near Valdez or Mendenhall Glacier. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of adventure.
31. Explore Ice Caves in Iceland
Iceland is pure magic in the winter — and exploring ice caves there is like stepping into a real-life fantasy.
The bright blue ice, the way the light filters through, the echo of your footsteps — it’s kind of surreal. You definitely need a guide for this one (safety first!), but there are a bunch of amazing tours that will take you to hidden caves and frozen tunnels.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to do this experience when I visited Iceland. I was traveling with a friend and staying with her family, and we weren’t anywhere near the areas where the ice cave tours happen. But it’s 100% on my list for next time!
One of my friends recently did the tour and said it was absolutely unreal — like walking inside a sapphire. She showed me photos and I could not stop staring.
If you love nature and don’t mind the cold, it’s a winter adventure worth planning for.
32. Explore Hallstatt, Austria in the Snow
Hallstatt is one of those places that doesn’t even look real in pictures — and in person, it’s even more magical.
Tucked between the lake and the mountains, this tiny Austrian village turns into a snowy wonderland in winter. We spent a day here walking the quiet streets, sipping warm drinks, and taking in the dreamy views.
It’s peaceful, photogenic, and full of old-world charm. Definitely add it to your European winter bucket list.
33. Take a Winter Cooking Class
One of my favorite things to do when I travel is take a cooking class — and winter is the perfect time to do it.
Pretty much every destination offers some kind of local cooking experience, and it’s such a fun way to connect with the culture (and eat something delicious). Plus, when it’s freezing outside, spending a few warm hours inside a cozy kitchen? Yes please.
I’ve taken cooking classes in Italy and Thailand, and they were both such highlights of the trip. You learn hands-on, meet locals, and get a meal out of it — what’s not to love?
So if you’re traveling this winter, look into cooking classes wherever you’re going. Whether it’s handmade pasta in Europe or street food favorites in Southeast Asia, it’s a fun, tasty way to make memories.
34. Experience a Traditional Sauna in Finland
This one is high on my list for this coming winter — I’m finally going to Finland, and you better believe I’m planning to experience a real Finnish sauna.
It’s actually a holiday tradition there! Families warm up in the sauna on Christmas Eve before dinner, and some even cool off by jumping into the snow or an icy lake after. (I don’t know if I’ll be that brave… but we’ll see!)
I’ve read so much about how relaxing and peaceful the experience is, especially when you’re surrounded by snowy landscapes. It’s the perfect way to slow down and soak in the season.
If you’re headed to Finland in winter, add this one to your bucket list. I can’t wait to report back!
35. Visit Zermatt, Switzerland in the Winter
Zermatt is straight-up dreamy in the winter.
This car-free mountain village sits right at the base of the Matterhorn (yep, the one from the Toblerone bar), and it feels like you’re walking through a snow globe.
There’s world-class skiing and snowboarding, but even if you don’t hit the slopes, it’s worth visiting for the views, the cozy chalet vibes, and the amazing fondue.
One of my favorite things? Taking the Gornergrat railway up the mountain — the views are unreal.
If you’re dreaming of a classic winter in the Alps, Zermatt should definitely be on your list.
36. Go on a Winter Photography Adventure
Go on a winter photography adventure armed with your camera and a passion for capturing the beauty of the season. Head to a local park, a snowy trail, or even your backyard – each place has its own charm.
The key is to embrace the challenge of shooting in colder temperatures and let the winter wonderland be your muse.
37. Partake in a Christmas Stroll in a nearby town or city
I love a good Christmas stroll. There’s something so cozy about walking through a town that’s all lit up with holiday lights, stopping for treats, and maybe doing a little shopping.
Even if you’re not traveling far, check out nearby towns or local events — a lot of places put on really charming holiday nights with carolers, hot cocoa stands, and festive vibes everywhere.
It’s a sweet way to get into the spirit, support local businesses, and make some simple memories.
38. Hop Between Caribbean Islands
Island hopping in the Caribbean is one of my favorite ways to break up the cold season. My husband and I are big fans of Belize — it’s got warm breezes, beautiful beaches, and such a chill vibe.
One winter, we did an incredible sailing trip through the British Virgin Islands. It was such a fun way to explore — waking up to turquoise water, snorkeling right off the boat, and ending each day with a sunset and fresh seafood. It was the perfect escape from the cold and one of our favorite trips ever.
There are so many islands to explore, each with its own personality. Whether you’re snorkeling, sipping something fruity, or just lounging in the sun, it’s a total reset from snowy winter days.
If you’re feeling the winter blues, grab your swimsuit and book that flight.
39. Fly in a Hot Air Balloon Over Fairy Chimneys in Cappadocia, Turkey
If there’s one place that feels straight out of a fantasy movie, it’s Cappadocia.
And seeing it from a hot air balloon? Absolutely unreal — especially in winter. The snow-covered fairy chimneys and soft morning light make it feel even more magical.
I still remember the feeling of floating quietly above the other balloons as the sun came up. It’s peaceful, surreal, and honestly, one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.
If you’re going to do it, I recommend booking the balloon ride early — they can fill up fast, especially in peak season.
40. Visit a National Park in the Winter
The winter is the best time to visit some of my favorite national parks because there is no timed entry required and the crowds are way less. Sometimes non-existent.
And if you choose parks that get minimal snow, you have access to pretty much everything in the park. Just be sure to dress warm!
My all-time favorite national parks to visit in the winter are those in Utah and Arizona.
41. Make your New Year’s Travel Bucket List
This has become a little tradition of mine each January.
Instead of resolutions, I like to sit down with a cup of coffee and write out the adventures I want to have in the year ahead. It’s fun, it’s motivating, and it helps me stay intentional about making travel a priority.
Whether it’s big trips or little weekend getaways, having a list makes it feel more real. I flip through old journals, check my master list, and dream up what’s next.
Highly recommend doing the same — you might surprise yourself with what ends up becoming a reality.
That’s a Wrap on Your Epic Winter Travel Bucket List
Whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights in Iceland, soaking in a hot spring surrounded by snow, or sipping rum on a beach in Belize — winter is full of opportunities for adventure.
You don’t have to stay stuck inside. Get out there, explore, and make memories that last long after the snow melts.
